In a moment things can change and the pressure is heightened as it becomes a dangerous intent…

Darryl Ruane didn’t expect a favor for his brother would lead him into trouble. The best kind of trouble with golden eyes who knows their way around a gun. She’s a sexy woman with an edge of danger to her and she sets his pulse racing. They just met but he already knows he wants to make her his.

Callie Moore doesn’t expect spending time with her family would need her skills. Yet when danger erupts she does as she does and steps in. The man didn’t really need help and he could handle himself. And she is drawn to him when she isn’t used to letting her emotions rule the way she behaves. This time she goes with her instincts yet once they get to the bottom of what happened that brought them together how do they go forward.

Sometimes life throws something in your path and it’s a matter of letting go or embracing that dangerous intent…

Creative Pursuits - Drawing

20151016_134435I mentioned a while ago about my need for one of my creative pursuits that I haven’t done in a while. Sucess, I finally got what I needed. Although I had a problem when I went to get it. I wanted to get everything. LOL. I was lured by all the pretty shiny. I got my sketch pad and pencils.

I’m going to get back to drawing. Another of my creative pursuits filled. Love being creative. :)

What are some of your creative pursuits?

Ink Motions with Olivia Night

tcinkmotions-sm3-300x172

12185708_10154474988518475_1688844598_o-1

Olivia Night, a fictional character herself, has always been an avid reader and writer. She found the romance genre in college and has never been able to get enough. One sleepless night, the main characters of Book One in her Seduction series sprang from her head fully formed. They demanded she tell their story; so she did. As they revealed themselves, so did two other intriguing characters. Those characters convinced her to give them their own books because their stories were worth telling too. And so Olivia suddenly became a romance author. When Olivia is not writing, she has the best job in the world, which, too, will remain a secret. In her free time, she reads, write, runs, or is, most likely, out emulating Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Olivia lives in one of the most diverse and vibrant cities in the U.S.—Baltimore. She lives with her cat, which she is convinced was a gladiator in his past life. Olivia plans to continue being awesome at this thing called life. Really, that’s her only goal.

Ink Motions - Interview

How do you get an idea for your novel?

The idea and characters for my first book quite literally popped into my head one night when I couldn’t sleep. As I wrote the book two other characters came forward and I began to write their stories down.

The idea for my second series, book one, came to me while I was cleaning and listening to Billy Joel’s And So It Goes. The song is incredibly sad and it made me ponder real loss and how painful that is. The characters who had experienced this kind of loss came to me and I sat down immediately and wrote down as much as I could. As I wrote those first thirty pages three others ladies with loss in their past came forward and they will have books too.

What is your writing style? Do you just sit down and write or do you create.

Typically, the ideas just come to me. After I think over things for a day or two I will sit down and outline the story. Sometimes I leave things blank and come back to it later. But for the most part I can outline the whole book in one sitting.
How many novels have you written including all work in progresses you are currently working on?

I have one published, Seduction in Sierra Leone, one that will be published this winter, Seduction in Seville and I am currently writing the third and finale installment in the series, Seduction in Scotland. I am also working on a new series and have written about five chapters in the first book and have outlined the three other books in that series as well.

What is you favorite plot line type?
Suspense of course!

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?

Don’t give up! Keep writing!

What is a good villain?

Someone that brings out emotion in the reader. This can be fear, frustration, anger and even sympathy.

An excerpt
Together, they watched the truck, a far better model than either had seen in their time here, tip and tilt as four men emerged. Aislinn couldn’t see any of them very well, though she could tell they were all very large, muscular men, all in different ways. One was short and squat, and one was short and lean and looked as though he really needed to eat. The other two were tall. Those two were muscular and looked more dangerous than the others. Perhaps it was the serious look on their faces, as if they had never smiled. But one was more muscular than the others. He was the tallest in the group. And he was really, really easy on the eyes. And as if he sensed her watching him—okay, staring—he turned his head and looked directly over at her.
His face was blank, his eyes unblinking. He looked across the short distance at Aislinn, apparently not even noticing that Geoff was standing in front of her. From the distance between them, his eyes seemed to be charcoal gray, a color she had never seen on a person. Animals yes, people no. His skin was tanned, and there was a slight sheen of sweat, giving him a sort of healthy glow. His dark black hair was cut short, but not in a military fashion that had that silly flat surface at the top. No, there was just enough to run her fingers through. His legs were huge, like tree trunks that made their way up to a tapered and slim waist. His chest flared back out to meet his thick neck. Veins stood out on his arms as he picked a bag up from inside the car, all the while staring at her. She fixed her eyes shamelessly at his full lips that were a dark pink, a color you normally didn’t see on a man. His nose had been broken before, judging by the uneven placement on his face. The rest of his face was perfect. Perfect angles, perfect mouth, perfect eyes.
She came back to his eyes and realized she had just, very slowly, given this stranger a full-body perusal. He didn’t offer a nod, or any other type of greeting; he just kept looking at her. She felt herself blush. And then, suddenly, he turned. Brima, the town elder, was approaching the men—quickly for an old man—with a broad smile on his face. Brima rubbed the man’s chin, a traditional Mende greeting, and, as was customary, the man did not return the gesture as a symbol of acquiescence to the elder. Then they both smiled and shook hands. The muted tones of their conversation drifted over to her as they walked to the elder’s home farther up the path, leading away from the road.

Ink Motions with Celia Aaron

tcinkmotions-sm3-300x172

cut AaronCelia Aaron is, by necessity, a pseudonym. This is because I am a fine, upstanding legal professional by day and a dark and dirty author by night. I formerly spent my days prosecuting bad boys and locking them up. Now, I'm in private practice, though there are still plenty of bad boys -- camouflaged by suits and ties -- to fantasize over and write about. I intend to add some of these suited lady killers to my cast of characters in the near future.

Ink Motions - Interview

How do you get an idea for your novel?

Depends. Sometimes I just have a thought or see something that makes me create a little story in my mind.

What is your writing style? Do you just sit down and write or do you create a timeline?

I'm a hybrid. I have a general outline, but I'm mostly a pantser who makes it up as I go along.

Who is the "Writing Muse" in your life?
Good books. Books that I read and then go "holy shit, that was awesome." I don't pretend to think I can match the greatness, but it definitely makes me want to try.

How many novels have you written including all work in progresses you are
currently working on?

About six and a half.

Who is your "writing idol"? I.E. Who do you like and what is it about there writing that captures your soul?

I can't name just one. There are so many great storytellers out there who know the elements of a good yarn.

What is you favorite plot line type?

Beauty and the Beast.

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?

Make the time to write, even if it's only thirty minutes a day. Read a lot.

What is a good villain?

Someone who's the hero of their own story. Someone who is complex and isn't evil just to be evil.

Excerpt from Counsellor

I held my ground. He could hurt me, but I wouldn’t give him the benefit of my fear. I stared into him, past the blue and deeper, watching as they turned from anger to heat. The air in the room shifted, like an electrical current hummed between us.

All the concern that he’d walked in with was gone. He looked…hungry, as if the moon had emerged from behind a cloud and revealed him to be some sort of ravenous wolf.

His gaze traveled my face, my body. When heat erupted along my skin as if he’d touched me, I knew I was damned. To want the touch of the devil was nothing short of a mortal sin.

I struck him, my open palm whipping across his face with a satisfying slap. He didn’t retaliate, just tilted his head to the side until his neck popped in the most unnerving fashion. What had been fire in his eyes was now a raging inferno.

He advanced, only inches from me now. I pulled my hand back to strike him again, but he caught it, squeezing my wrist painfully. I tilted my chin up, meeting his vicious encroachment with defiance. He wouldn’t frighten me out of this space. It was mine. I didn’t care if the entire place was covered in fucking vines, I would slash and burn them until I’d cleared an area for me, my paint, my books, and my own bit of freedom.

Quick as an adder, he put his free hand to my face. I didn’t flinch, though I expected him to strike me. The heat in his gaze spoke of something explosive—violence or desire, maybe a heady mix of both. When his palm touched my skin, my eyes closed involuntarily.

“So soft.” His voice was tinged with wonder.

I was down the rabbit hole, everything topsy-turvy and wrong, because his touch—god, his touch. It was like I’d been starving for it this entire time but didn’t know it. When I opened my eyes, he leaned down, his lips teasing mine with the bare millimeters of distance. He was a gorgeous villain, a predator dressed up as a man.

I raised my unrestrained hand to hit him again, but he caught it, too, and wrenched both of them behind my back. He pressed me into his chest, caging me with his body. I could feel the blaze emanating from him, the desire like a heat wave. Could he feel mine? His gaze held me fast, furious and possessive. He looked at me like I was his. Not because of a contract, not because of the Acquisition, but because the intensity of his desire made it so. He would have what he wanted. His gaze flicked down to my mouth and he dipped his head lower, his breath grazing my lips.
I burned to destroy him, to leave him in flames as I walked away from the ashes. But first … just a kiss.

About the Book:

In the heart of Louisiana, the most powerful people in the South live behind elegant gates, mossy trees, and pleasant masks. Once every ten years, the pretense falls away and a tournament is held to determine who will rule them. The Acquisition is a crucible for the Southern nobility, a love letter written to a time when barbarism was enshrined as law.

Now, Sinclair Vinemont is in the running to claim the prize. There is only one way to win, and he has the key to do it — Stella Rousseau, his Acquisition. To save her father, Stella has agreed to become Sinclair’s slave for one year. Though she is at the mercy of the cold, treacherous Vinemont, Stella will not go willingly into darkness.

As Sinclair and Stella battle against each other and the clock, only one thing is certain: The Acquisition always ends in blood.

Ink Motions with K.T. Black

Ink Motions - Interview

How did you get the idea for your novel?

There's an old lifetime movie I liked called The World's Oldest Living Bridesmaid. I did a variation on that theme and added in the paranormal element.

What is your writing style? Do you just sit down and write or do you create?

My life's been a bit crazy lately with starting a new day job and having to relocate, so my writing habits are a bit erratic at the moment. In general, I try to set aside at least an hour every day to sit down and write. When I'm good, I do at least 1,000 words.

Who is the "Writing Muse" in your life? I.E. who gets your juices flowing

Well, I don't really have just one "Writing Muse." All kinds of different things inspire me to write. Unusual people I meet, things that happen when I'm out and about, or a strange dream.

How many novels have you written including all work in progresses you are currently working on?

At the moment, I have two stories that are published. The Assistant (M/F), and my debut novella, Wicked Magic: Spellbound Book 1 (F/F), which is part of a series of modern fairy tales. Currently I am working on Book 2 of my Spellbound series. It’s called Strange Magic—a variation on Alice in Wonderland. At this point in time, I see at least one or two more books past that. Different fairy tales with a modern spin, but all the books will be linked together. The second book will elaborate further on just what direction I’m planning on taking the series. All the books will be contemporary full of witches, magic and some shape shifters, with the end game being a lesbian relationship established.
Who is your "writing idol"? I.E. Who do you like and what is it about their writing that captures your soul?

I give credit Daphne du Maurier, or more precisely, her novel Rebecca for influencing my writing. Her writing style, in this story, is vivid, poetic and somewhat dark. The main character starts out weak, but transforms over the story as she faces each challenge. What I found interesting is you never learn her actual name. She goes from working as a companion of an overbearing woman to a meek wife. Then she becomes known as Mrs. DeWinter throughout the story, always in the shadow of the first wife, Rebecca. She does discover her identity and power, but her name is never revealed. Quite inventive and effect.

What is your favorite plot line type?

I'm not certain how to actually classify it, but I like plotlines where the protagonist discovers they are more than they realized--have magical abilities, etc.--with a destiny to defeat the antagonist.

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?

Don’t give up. If writing is your passion, don’t let fear or other people talk you out of doing it. Rejection sucks, but when someone finally tells you yes, it makes it all worth it.

What is a good villain?

I think a good villain is someone that makes you both love and hate them. They're fun to write. Through those kinds of characters, I get to do and say things that I wish I could do in real life. Not hurt anyone, but to have the power to know someone wouldn't dare harass me.

Excerpt:

A half hour later, her coffee cup empty, Elise sat in her office staring off into space. Why did her thoughts manage to work their way back to Dylan Holt? The thing that bothered her the most about the man wasn’t that she disliked him, like everyone thought. What bothered her was how much she liked him.

Since Dylan started working for her, the energy in the office had altered. She felt something changing inside as well. Something that frightened her. Richard was the last person to make her feel like this. No, she shook her head. This was different, something much more intense. At the office, driving in traffic, in her home, sexy daydreams about her and Dylan consumed her thoughts. It felt like she was going through puberty again.

Pushing her folders aside, Elise leaned back in her chair and allowed her mind to wander.

* * * *

It was late. The building was vacant except for her and Dylan. Focused on computer work, she didn’t see or hear when Dylan entered her office. It’s only when she felt a pair of hands resting on top of her shoulders that she knew something had changed.

“What are you doing?” Elise protested, attempting to stand but remained seated, held in place by two strong hands.

“You work too hard.” Dylan’s voice was low, husky. “You need to learn how to relax.”

“But—”

When those hands began to knead her shoulders and neck, Elise stopped talking. Her eyes drooped, threatening to close as her body responded to Dylan’s touch.

“It’s been a long time, hasn’t it?”

“Too b-busy.” As her muscles began to relax, that wasn’t all she felt. Arousal. She shifted in her seat when the throbbing between her legs become more pronounced, discovering how wet she was becoming. No, she needed to stop this now. “This isn’t—”

“Appropriate? No, maybe not, but necessary.”

“Mr. Holt.” The objection was weak. Elise knew it.

“I told you to call me Dylan. But, it does kind of turn me on to hear you say, Mr. Holt.” His tone was suggestive, full of naughty implications.

Elise shivered, a jolt of pleasure settled low in her belly, and her nipples tightened, responding to his touch.

“I know you like me, as much as you pretend to only tolerate me. Why won’t you admit it, Elise?”

“Don’t—”

“Don’t what? Don’t stop?” Dylan’s hands drifted downward. As he slipped inside the top of Elise’s blouse, he skimmed his fingertips across the top of plump flesh not covered by her bra. “I see how you look at me. Don’t think I haven’t noticed.”

Ink Motions with Roslyn Bane

tcinkmotions-sm3

Ink Motions Blog

How do you get an idea for your novel?

At times I will see a person that catches my eye and I have the basics for a character. Other times I may overhear snippets of conversation and my imagination takes over. Local and national news events sometimes inspire story.

I try to put real life issues into my books; abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, loss of a loved one, and see how the characters respond to these stressors. I like to see people beat the odds.

My stories are based in small towns or smaller cities. Everything I am currently working on is planned as part of a series.
What is your writing style? Do you sit down and write or do you create?

Usually I wake up with an idea, and rush to get it down on paper. The longer I wait to put it down the more it changes. I don’t plot out in advance, and I don’t write from beginning to end. As different scenes and scenarios appear in my mind I put them down. I figure out the sequence later. Sometimes the same scenario will be written out several times with various twists and turns until it feels right. Usually the scenes first written end up near the middle of the book. The better I get to know my characters the faster the story develops.

Who is the “Writing Muse” in your life? Music helps me get motivated to write, and if often sets the tone for the character/scene I am working with.
How many novels have you written including all work in progress you are currently working on?

I have one complete novel and three under way, all in various stages of development and in different series.
Who is your writing idol?

That really depends on genre. For horror Stephen King and Edgar Allen Poe. The depth of the characters and scenes is amazing. King is excellent in describing his villain so well but still leaving just enough description out that the readers own imagination can finish filling in its appearance. For romance it depends on subgenre. I prefer contemporary romance and enjoy Nora Roberts, for romantic comedy I enjoy Misty Simon. In LGBT Romance I like Isabella and the depth of character she brings to her female heroines.
What is your favorite plot line?

My favorite plot line is pretty much that something horrible has happened to the heroine— it may have occurred years earlier or just recently. Whatever the timing it changes the heroine in ways that make her strong, independent and surprisingly vulnerable. I write romance so there is going to be a happy ever after, but the characters are going to have to acknowledge and confront their demons and weaknesses.
Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?

Just start writing. Put your ideas down, you can refine them later. Make writing a priority, and find time to write every day, even if it’s only 50 words. Also read books on the craft of writing, join RWA, and your local chapter. If you don’t live close to a local chapter, join an online chapter. Take online courses on writing craft and go to conferences whenever possible.
What is a good villain?

My characters usually have to conquer their own internal conflict, so the villain within themselves is their most feared adversary.

One woman has given up on love. One is trying to find her place in a new town. When their lives collide, they must find a way to put their pasts behind them and learn to trust and love again. Time for Terri is a great beginning to Roslyn Bane’s new contemporary romance series, Smoky Mountain Romance.

Terri Greene is a professional photographer who travels the world but calls the small town of Bryson City, NC home. She has made a nice life for herself and kept her painful past deeply buried. She has a reputation for being friendly but elusive. She hammered her heart shut years ago and has long since given up hope for a loving relationship.

Sheila McDevitt, a new arrival to town, has opened a veterinary practice and is determined to succeed in this close-knit community. Viewed as an outsider, she struggles to grow her practice. Unfinished business from her past causes difficulties with her current plans.

When these two women’s lives intersect the changes are unforeseeable. As trust grows and inner demons are tamed, can they see past their own busy professional lives and find success in the part of life that matters most.

EXCERPT

Terri accelerated the bike smoothly, when Sheila tightened her grip she was able to suppress her groan but not the quiver in her abdomen. The air was starting to chill as the sun drifted lower in the sky, long shadows crossing the road. She felt Sheila shiver. “Move close to me to stay warm. Let me know if you get too cold.” A moment later she felt Sheila lean into her, hold on tighter. Over the next twenty minutes she felt her occasionally squirm, felt her legs press slightly tighter around her own hips. Thirty minutes later they made the turn the turn to Terri’s house. “Hold on tight it’s really bumpy.” Terri drove the bike confidently up the steep bumpy road. Finally it leveled and she turned into her driveway. Stopping the bike she turned it off. Waited while Sheila got off, removed her helmet. She then swung off, and quickly removed her helmet. “Are you warm enough?”

“Yes. Now that the wind stopped. I’m fine.”

“Good.” She pulled Sheila towards her in a fierce, passionate kiss that had both of them breathless quickly. Lust raced through her body and her heart pounded. She tightened her arms around Sheila’s waist. Heard her own groan.

Sheila returned the kiss with fervent passion, her hands ran across the stiff leather. She desperately wanted to feel flesh. The kiss broke, Sheila nearly staggered. Terri took her hand pulled her to the porch. She backed Sheila up against the door frame, held her hands held above her head as their mouths met again.

Ink Motions with Errin Stevens

tcinkmotions-sm3

Errin Stevens writes paranormal romance novels from her home in Minnesota, where she lives with her husband and son. Her first novel, Updrift, will debut with Liquid Silver Books in October 2015. For more information and updates, visit Errin’s web site at http://errinstevens.com.

How do you get an idea for your novel?

I’ll have a character in mind and sometimes a few scenes, and if these threads stay with me for more than a day or two – where I can’t stop thinking about them – I’ll spend a week trying to develop them into actual narrative during my daily writing sessions. If the story grows in a way I like and other characters and plot elements come to light as I work, I’ll commit to writing the whole shebang into a novel. And I’ve led myself down the garden path more times than I can stand to think about!

What is your writing style? Do you just sit down and write or do you create some other mechanism to help you?

I start out writing on the fly and then at some undefined point (20,000 – 40,000 words?), I create a story map, which is a Word document with a grid that shows plot progression by chapter. This often helps me realize what needs to happen next in my story when I’m stuck, as well as where I’ve left gaping holes.

Who is the “Writing Muse” in your life? I.E. who gets your juices flowing?

I have always loved to read, and I’m pretty indiscriminate in my tastes, since I truly do like almost everything. I do remember being blown away by “Three Junes” (2002 National Book Award winner) by Julia Glass. Blown. Away. Her use of voice, which I’m pretty sure is not admired by many editors nowadays was so crisp, so brilliant. And I’ve never seen the man or even spent much time hunting down info on him online, but I consider myself an Ian McEwan groupie. His writing is so dang fabulous.

How many novels have you written including all work in progresses you are currently working on?

I have three drafted, all in the same series.

Who is your “writing idol”? I.E. Who do you like and what is it about there writing that captures your soul?

In addition to the high-brow folks I mentioned above, I love reading passages from Kresley Cole’s “Immortals After Dark” series for fun, quippy dialogue. J.R. Ward does a rock star job on this front too.

What is you favorite plot line type?

Romantic suspense, no question.

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?

What is a good villain?

I remember one creative writing teacher telling me a novel can only be as strong overall as the antagonist is strong. I had to think about that for a year before I really understood it, but the professor was right. Make your bad guy/girl multi-dimensional, and more importantly, sympathetic. Give the reader relatable reasons for why he or she does all that evil. Your other characters – in fact your whole story – will be more compelling.

Blurb for Updrift

Since her father died, Kate Sweeting’s home life has been in the pits, her well-being on life support. Her future looks desolate until she and her mother, Cara, make another plan: abandon their shriveled existence for more promising prospects on the coast, where her mom can play small-town librarian-bachelorette and Kate can figure out what’s up with the secretive Blake family from the beach.

Everyone is eerily captivated with Kate and her mother, and Cara is the first to figure out why when the man of her dreams arrives all dripping and devoted and closed-mouthed about what he intends. Kate is willing to go along with their subterfuge for a while, but eventually makes a charge for the water to learn what her mother is hiding. Gabe Blake is there waiting for her…and so is someone considerably less friendly. By the time Kate navigates her way home, everything will have changed for her—what she feels, what she wants, and what she will risk to be with the man she loves.

Interview:
When or what made you decide to become an author?

I’ve always wanted to be an author since I was four years old. I grew up telling stories long before I learned how to write. I never wavered by passing the doctor, vet, and ballerina stages. Naturally writing was the only career path for me.

How do you get an idea for your novel?

I got the idea for Midnight Caller by reading Black Life on the Mississippi by Thomas C. Buchanan. Many of my historical romances are inspired by true events. Sometimes fact is stranger than fiction, such as colored steamboat workers pleasuring white women at night.

What is the inspiration you use?

Do you mean what inspires me? Usually something I read or something I watch on TV. Many historical stories do not end well, and I reimagine them with a romantic happily ever after.

What is your writing style? Do you just sit down and write or do you create character sketches, outlines, or notes?

I work with a general outline of the beginning, middle, and end. I have notes with each character’s goals and motivations and the character arcs, plot arc, and romance arc for my story.

Who is the "Writing Muse" in your life? I.E. who gets your juices flowing when you are blocked?

When I’m blocked I go for a walk or a hike or try to immerse myself in anything mindless like watching a movie or listening to music. I have found forcing ideas to come rarely works.

Walk me though the way you create a novel from conception to completion.

I start by writing a very basic outline and sometimes doing brief character sketches. After I have written the first draft I dig deeper into my characters and make notes for revision, write a more detailed outline, and plot/romance arcs. I edit and refine the story accordingly and then send the next draft to my alpha and beta readers. I use their valued feedback to guide my next editing passes and refine until I feel the story is complete.

What is the type of voice you use and why?

I write with a serious voice and often tackle serious issues like racism and poverty in my novels. I think books can teach readers about the world they live in and even more about themselves. I like to think my books are educational and not just about history. There is a lot we can learn about the human condition.

How many novels have you written including all work in progresses you are currently working on?

If I count my works in progress that number grows weekly! I’ve published 21 stories and I probably have just as many WIPs. The plot bunnies keep coming.

Who is your "writing idol"? I.E. Who do you like and what is it about their writing that captures your soul?

I suppose my writing idol is Beverly Jenkins. She made African American historical romance popular, and has made a name for herself mostly writing in that genre. I love her books.

What is your favorite plot line type?

I enjoy reading many different tropes, but when it comes to writing I tend to gravitate toward forbidden love and star-crossed lovers.

What is your current work in progress and how did get the idea for the Work in Progress?

My current work in progress is a historical romance adaptation of a historical fiction novel I’ve already published. I’ve had many readers ask for the romance version. The Native American/African-American story was inspired by a dream.

Describe the major conflict between the hero and heroine in your novel?

The major conflict in Midnight Caller is the fact that southern society declares the hero and heroine should never be together. By lying with Emma, a white woman, Frederick is putting his life in danger and her reputation.

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?

Take as many writing classes as you can, read books on craft, constantly read books in multiple genres and just write. It often takes many novels which will never see the light of day before you write something worthy of publishing.

Where are the bodies buried? IE Is there any old work in progresses you threw aside and decided not to complete and why?

I have a few stories that need a lot of work. One I started in high school and others I wrote experimenting with plot devices. I doubt my historical mystery WIP will ever see the light of day. I apparently can’t write mystery!

What is a good villain?

A good villain is a well-developed character who is believable and has motivations behind their actions. A good villain will pose a difficult challenge to the goals the hero/heroine wishes to achieve.

Are there any last comments you may want to include?

Happy endings are not just for romance novels. Please do not give up on love.

An excerpt

He held his breath, his insides pressed together. Was she going to send him away?
Finally, her lips settled in a smile. “Shall we go to the bedroom?”
“As you wish, ma’am.” He managed to sound casual despite his hardening cock. When he took off his clothes she’d find out in an instant how attractive he found her, how much he desired her, the power she held over him. His entire body heated, embarrassment rivaling the fire of passion.
Already his thoughts had moved past coffee and to his delightful business. He couldn’t wait to see her naked, know the curve of her breasts, let his hands roam her hips. He’d laid with a lot of women, but never one as young and as sumptuous as this one.
“Strip to the waist and sit on the bed.”
“Yes, ma’am.” Frederick yanked off his shoes, and then he folded and piled his coat, vest, and shirt neatly on the floor before sitting on the edge of the mattress. The attraction between them was strong and undeniable. He was a bee and she was a beautiful rose. He was sure her nectar would be delicious, if only he would be granted a taste. Whether he would be granted a taste was in her hands. She was paying for an experience and it was his duty to give her whatever she wanted. It wasn’t in his nature to submit, but the sight of her beauty as she stood before him, made it more bearable.
He knew his job after more secret trysts than he could count and fell into his role with ease. He wanted to please Emma, satisfy her every desire. The excitement in her gaze tempered, and he sensed her hesitation. Hopefully she’d muster the confidence to play her part.
“Spread your legs.” Emma sauntered into him, standing between his splayed thighs. She traced every muscle in his chest. The pads of her fingers caressed him, almost teasing. He tightened his stomach muscles, but was unable to prevent a tiny shudder.
Her smile widened, revealing a row of perfectly straight teeth. A thrum of pleasure rushed through him.
He wanted to wrap his arms around her but resisted. He had not been given permission.

Ink Motions with Zenobia Renquist

tcinkmotions-sm3-300x172

Interview ~ Zenobia Renquist

How do you get an idea for your novel?
I get ideas from everything. Most of my ideas start with the phrase “wouldn’t it be funny if…” or I’ll just be sitting watching TV and characters will start arguing in my head. It’s then my job to figure out why they are arguing, how they met, and where they are going.

Sometimes my friends will give me a prompt to write about, like in the case of Or Current Resident (Soul Debt) and the Assistant’s Position Series. Both of those came from Flash Fiction Friday prompts. Rite Men for Maya, my first novella with Changeling Press, came from a challenge Stephanie Burke gave me to write a story for the “gayest tattoo ever.” Do a search. That exact phrasing and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Other times, it’s just a matter of wanting to write a specific type of character, like a unicorn, and building a plot around that character.

What is your writing style? Do you just sit down and write or do you create an outline?
I used to just sit and write whatever came to mind first. Stream of consciousness is a great way to get words on the page. I’ve found it’s not so great when trying to finish a book in a specific amount of time. For that reason, I’ve taken to creating a rough outline of points I want to hit in each chapter so I keep myself on track.

I have a lot of books I want to finish in the next few months, so I need a plan of attack that will optimize every second I’m in front of my computer. It’s great when inspiration hits and the words just flow but that doesn’t happen all the time with a predictable amount of consistency. Sometimes it’s just a matter of getting words down and hoping inspiration hits when it’s time to edit.

Who is the "Writing Muse" in your life?
I write. It’s something I have to do. Writing is to me what smoking/drinking is to others. It’s my vice, my addiction, my way of dealing with reality. I become very irritable and hard to be around when I’m not allowed to write, like when life obligations pry me away from my computer. Whether I write the story I’m supposed to be working on (ie – in the case of a deadline) is a different matter entirely.

How many novels have you written including all work in progresses you are currently working on?
Written. Wow. Let me count. Under my real name D. Renee Bagby I have written 8 novels. Of those eight, 5 have been published and the other three need to be brought up to my current standards before I try to get them published. One was recently reverted to me but will be re-published after I tweak it. Under Zenobia Renquist, I have written 2 novels and about 42 novellas. Of those both novels and 36 novellas are published. A few titles have been reverted back to me. I have plans to tweak them all and re-publish those as well.

Who is your "writing idol?" I.E. Who do you like and what is it about there writing that captures your soul?
I would have to say it’s a toss up between Jayne Ann Krentz/Amanda Quick and Jude Deveraux. Both ladies filled my high school years. They released books and I read them. Their characters weren’t perfect people falling into fated love. They were flawed and combative and worked at getting to the happily ever after. Not only that, their plots kept me turning pages just to find out how they would be resolved. I strive for the same in my stories and use both ladies as my template for achieving that goal.

What is you favorite plot line type?
Always and forever, my favorite plot type will be Beauty and the Beast. I like for my heroines and heroes to clash before they fall in love. I never understood those stories that had the main characters in love from the first moment they meet and everything is roses and chirping birds. If life is happy from the jump for the main characters, why am I still reading this book? I want conflict—man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. self. Beauty and the Beast has all three and I love playing with those major conflicts to create a great story.

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?
If you want to write, WRITE. Talking about writing isn’t writing. Reading about writing isn’t writing. Telling people you want to write a book isn’t writing. Writing is writing. Butt in seat. Fingers on keys. Words on the page. Beginning. Middle. End. Write. Finish. Publish. Repeat. Anyone can be a writer. Only those who get published get to call themselves authors.

What is a good villain?
I recently returned from Dragon*Con in Atlanta, GA. Great convention, if a tad on the crowded side. At the convention I attended the Sleepy Hollow panel when John Noble (Henry) sat in until Tim Mison (Ichabod) showed up, since he was late. Mr. Noble was asked which he preferred to play, the hero or the villain.

His answer has become mine when asked what makes a good villain. He said this (paraphrasing)—a good villain is a person who is doing what s/he feels is the right thing but goes about achieving it the wrong way. It’s easy to point and say someone is a bad guy because they are evil and kick puppies and take candy from babies. What makes a great villain, those villains we absolutely love, are the ones who are acting to achieve a goal s/he feels is worthwhile. But the way the villain goes about getting to that goal is usually the most direct (ie – evilest) route possible.

My best example of that would be dealing with over-population. A hero would try to find some way to convince people to have fewer children and spread out to less urban areas so there isn’t overcrowding. That’s a solution that may work over time. A villain would simply poison half the population. Same outcome (as it were) but different ways of going about it.

She drew in a long gasping breath and then choked on it as someone knocked at the door.
“Room service.”
She widened her eyes, and her pleasure dropped to nil.
“Ah. Right on time.” Mr. Malena dialed off the vibrator, removed it, and set it aside. He called, “One moment.”
“What?” Lexie asked in a frantic whisper. She clutched at the comforter, debating if she should hide in the bathroom or under the bed. Had the server heard her? Had he recognized her voice?
She looked at her uniform draped over the back of the chair. He would know a housekeeper was with Mr. Malena. A housekeeper who was undressed with a wide variety of toys out in the open. No deductive reasoning was needed to figure out what was happening or who the housekeeper was.
Mr. Malena patted her belly. “Shhhh.” He held his finger to his lips. “Just relax.”
“I can’t relax,” Lexie whispered back. “He’ll see me.”
“No, he won’t.” He grinned. “Not your face, at any rate.” He urged her to lie back before draping a towel over her head. “There.”
“Wha—”
“Shhhh. You don’t want him to recognize your voice, if you know him. So long as you stay still, he won’t see your face.”
“What about the rest of me? What about my uniform? And the cart outside?” Lexie could see her job ending. She should have known this was too good to be true.
“I’ll take care of it. Now hush.”
Clothing rustled. Lexie peeked under the towel in time to see Mr. Malena fold her uniform into one of the dresser drawers and close it. He slipped on a robe and then glanced back at her. She yanked the towel back down. She wanted to roll herself in the comforter. Wanted to and didn’t at the same time.
She only had to keep her face covered, and the server wouldn’t know who she was. The idea of letting a virtual stranger see her naked titillated her. Her clit throbbed and ached to be touched. She clutched at the towel and waited.
Mr. Malena opened the door. “Thank you, my good man. I am famished. This way.”
Lexie frowned. When had he ordered room service? Had he done it before she arrived and known it would get here while they were playing? He did seem less flustered by this turn of events than she was, as if he’d planned it.
The server asked, “Where do you want— Whoa!”
A long pause followed that exclamation. The server had seen her.

Ink Motions with Kayleigh Sky

tcinkmotions-sm3-300x172

Interview with Kayleigh Sky

How do you get an idea for your novel?
Good question! It’s a somewhat mysterious process for me. I don’t generally start out to tell a particular story though I might want to pursue a specific sub-genre or approach once I have the glimmer of an idea. Glimmer. I like that word—a faint or unsteady light. I rely on visions, or I guess you could call them flash images. They come very quickly. For Backbone, I saw my protagonist, Brey, naked and chained to a floor. Zoom! There and gone. Just a quick picture. For a book I recently placed with Pride Publishing, which will be released early next year, I saw a man being formally presented, almost like an offering, to another man. And for my WIP I saw a face in shadow. These images have to be compelling, have to make me want to grab on, and then I start to ask questions. For Brey, I wondered how he came to be chained. I asked him. “How did this happen?” “What were you doing before this?” “Where were you going?” “What do you want?” “What are you being kept from?” And a question important for the other hero of the book—“Who is going to save you?” With that latter question I was able to start to build out my other protagonist. Asking these questions sets my imagination free, and the story begins to grow.

What is your writing style? Do you just sit down and write or do you create?
It depends. I wrote a lit fic work under a different name that was completely seat of the pants. It also took me about ten years. Who has that kind of time?!! LOL. I plot now, but this is after I brainstorm and work out various scenarios. I might also have a particular sub-genre I might want to try out. Usually the vision dictates the sub-genre but not always. So I brainstorm, free associate, go crazy, and as I do this, I will start to see patterns. This will be the big picture. I like to have my beginning, a couple of scenes, and then a rough idea of my ending. From there I’ll either begin writing, or I will plot the story out scene by scene as I did for my WIP. With this approach, I end up with a tagline, short synopsis, long synopsis, character sheets (of about 10-15 pages for each character), a detailed outline, and short descriptions of each scene. I use Scrivener to keep everything together. Love Scrivener!

Who is the “Writing Muse” in your life? I.E. who gets your juices flowing?
Thankfully, I don’t have one. What would I do if my muse got hit by a bus?! Just joking. I fall totally in love with my bottom boys. My guys are never versatile (never say never, I guess, but… ). Always a top, always a bottom. I love my tops, but my bottoms are probably my “muses”. They tend to be the drivers of my stories. It’s their mysteries, their secrets and hopes and dreams, and especially their demons, that draw me in and keep me going until I can get them to their happy endings.

How many novels have you written including all works in progress?
Including works in progress, seven. I have the lit fic I mentioned earlier, and as Kayleigh, there’s Backbone, the book currently under contract with Pride Publishing, my actual WIP, and three others in various stages of “evolution”.

Who is your “writing idol”?
Wow. Tough question. In the genre, probably Josh Lanyon for simplicity of language and complexity of character. In my youth, I was greatly affected by Hermann Hesse. Partly for the homoerotic undertones, but also because I found the portrayals of personal and social alienation to mirror my own interior life at the time. I’m a huge Raymond Chandler fan. I can’t get enough of Marlowe’s dry, cynical humor. And for sheer, exquisite mastery of language—Hemingway.

What is your favorite plot line type?
My favorite plot line is the one I pretty much stick to in all my stories—something horrific happens or has happened to the hero. Brey was kidnapped, brutalized, and sold into slavery. His happiness and true love came after struggle and sacrifice. I love HEA endings, but they really don’t mean much to me unless they come after unhappiness. There has to be a struggle. The hero has to show that what he wants matters. That he’d do anything for it. And in the process of the struggle he needs to learn about himself, to grasp with conviction what is really important to him in life. He can’t be a passive player. He needs to choose and fight. So I like plot lines where the hero experiences some pretty terrible trials on his way to a HEA. And he must get the HEA!!

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?
Learn the craft. Buy all the books on craft. Read them, practice them, commit them to memory. Go to workshops. Take classes. Buy more books on craft. Never stop learning about story. Story is magic but a real and tangible thing too. You don’t pull it out of thin air. Ideas on the other hand—those you can pull out of thin air. Give your readers a magical but well-crafted story. And write. Write every day. You might not have time to write a lot but you can write 500 words every day. That’s about a half hour. Sit down. Write. Writing isn’t a job, it’s a vocation. It’s the air you breathe, the dreams you dream. Give it its due. Write. Every day.

Blurb:

A universal vaccine eradicates all known viruses from the human population, but in the wake of this miracle, a deadly new virus suddenly surfaces. As the death toll rises, people riot in panic and civilization collapses. Brey Jamieson, a convicted felon, is suddenly set loose in this violent new world. Desperate to reunite with his family, he sets out on a journey across the country but is captured by a brutal man who plans to sell him into slavery. Hank Kresnak is a cop in the new world. It is his job to preserve the law. But when he sees Brey, his belief in everything he has built his new life on begins to crumble. Memories of a dark and terrible time reawaken. He was the cop who arrested Brey, and with one look into Brey’s eyes, he knew his life would never be the same. He was a married man with two daughters, but he couldn’t forget a man he barely even knew. Now his wife and daughters are gone, and he must struggle to save the man of his dreams from a nightmare fate.

Excerpt:

The man was bent over inside the gas station. Naked. Tied down.
Fuck. A slave.
Hank gave a tug on Trixie’s reins and pushed on through scrubby brown hills. The sky was a high, flat blue and a dry, astringent smell filled the air. Hank breathed deeply, inhaling a faint tickle of dust. Below was a spit of a town—just a gas station and an unused diner.
All familiar.
His life now. But, fuck, he didn’t want to see this. He was a cop, for godsakes. He was supposed to break up fights and put bad guys away. In his old life, he knew the homeless man who rummaged in the alleyway behind the Thai Palace by name. He guarded a social worker named Joy who came to take a five-year-old in pink barrettes out of a crack house where her daddy knifed her mommy to death for forgetting to put ice in his Pepsi. He dodged a TV somebody tried to drop on his head out of a fifth floor window. He took complaints and made reports. He hauled in pimps, drug dealers and drunk and disorderlies. He went after bad guys.
Guys like Thom—who bounced and wobbled in the too-hot sun. Animated. A friendly salesman.
Laughter floated in the air.
Christ, he wanted to go get that naked man. Wanted to grab him and run off with him.
Save him.
Like he couldn’t save anybody else.
He wanted his old life back. The life with the dance recitals, soccer, movies with Beth, game night with the girls, work, bills.
He liked that life. It was a good life.
Then a company called Bio-Gen Tech came out with a vaccine called Pox Vac and for only pennies a shot, almost all viruses—flu, colds, HIV—disappeared. Conspiracy theorists claimed that Pox Vac was really nanotechnology funded by corporations to control the purchasing habits of consumers. To them, that was the only way Pox Vac could make sense. Otherwise, it was un-American. There was no profit in cures. Hank scoffed at that. The girls got their shots. Beth too, but he didn’t. Lazy, he guessed.
It didn’t matter. Life went on—piano lessons, school plays, a trip to the Grand Canyon, work.
Then Beth’s affair.
He didn’t like to think about that, but it was a part of the end—like summer’s last barbecues and early twilights.
Then people began to die.
They called the new virus Eve. By spring, shell-shocked survivors scattered out of almost-empty cities. Now, three years later, he lived in a half-dead world with people like Thom Donnell, the bulbous, waddling former insurance salesman, because that’s what Thom was before—a salesman. Still a salesman. Gesticulating avidly to his customers between slaps to the naked man’s ass.
It made Hank’s blood boil.

Brey didn’t know where he was anymore. He thought he used to know. But now he wasn’t sure. His face scrunched up, but he didn’t feel it. All he felt was that bar under his belly, and he wanted to get away from it, but he couldn’t. His position confused him. He didn’t like it. He couldn’t get a good breath in, and his legs shook. He was hot, too.
Lemonade, he thought. That would be good. Under the veranda by the pool. A ball game on TV.
“Giants an’ Dodgers.”
“No Dodgers.”
He didn’t like that voice.
Metal clanked.
Fuck, that bar hurt.
Sweat stung his eyes, and he blinked grit away. There was concrete beneath him. A concrete floor. Oil stains. Oh yeah. A garage.
His legs shook again. Fuck. Fuck. “I have to go!”
Nobody looked at him, though. His voice wouldn’t come out. Only a raspy breath that he couldn’t quite catch. Noise rang in his ears—booming, raucous, shrill.
Fuck!
He struggled, metal bit into his wrists, and the pressure on his belly made his head swim. He was tired. Too tired for this. He didn’t want to do it anymore. Shame flooded him like hot water—itching, burning and stinging. Surreal. Out of nowhere. His memories of getting here swirled with images of swimming pools, orange and yellow leaves, a cell with bars, a blue strobe light, bare dry hills and a fat man smiling brightly.
Thom.
He couldn’t remember coming here, undressing or bending over the bar. Panic fluttered inside him, and he began to pant again. Please God, please. I don’t want this. I don’t. But he wasn’t really sure of that anymore.
“Stop!”
His breath rasped, and that laugh came again. High-pitched. Shrill. “Wakey-wakey.”
He thrashed. No!
One of the men grabbed onto him and slammed him against the bar. Pain burst inside, and his thoughts scattered again. He tried to grab on. Imagined a pool, lemonade, Goldy chasing tennis balls.
Sunshine.
The drone of a TV.
Beautiful things like autumn leaves.
His breath exploded. Oh please, God. Please. I wanna go home! Please, please.
But all that came out was a rasp, a whisper—“Help me”—followed by a voice that grunted in his ear. “Who’s gonna help you, pretty boy?”
Him, he thought, painlessly now, floating away again. Him.

Ink Motions - Interview

How did you get the idea for your novel?

The initial idea I had was very simple. What if you fell asleep in the backseat of your car, and woke up to find your car stolen?

That soon expanded into more questions. What if the people who stole the car were on the run from the police? What if they decided to kidnap you? And what if one of them was the most beautiful man you’d ever seen?

What is your writing style? Do you just sit down and write or do you create a storyboard, character sketches, outlines, or notes?

All sorts of characters, conflicts and scenes pop into my head constantly. But I have to wait until a handful of those characters, conflicts and scenes swim together in my mind and mesh just right. Then I get the "holy crap, that's perfect" feeling and know I've got a potential book.

That's when I collect all my notes, ideas and pictures together and the work starts. I can't write at all until I've thought of the right title. Then I outline a basic plot, but I don't like to plan everything down to the last detail, I'm too impatient to get started.

I never write characters unless I'm in love with them (be they good or evil) and they're the thing that keeps me inspired and excited to write every day.

How many novels have you written, including all works in progress you are currently working on?

This is my debut published book, but probably the fifth book I’ve written.

Almost everything I read is gay romance, and it’s the genre I love writing the most. So I'm currently writing two more M/M romance novels.

The story I'm working on now is influenced by the movie Rear Window. But the Jimmy Stewart character is younger and sexier, with tattoos, and his girlfriend is a boyfriend. Plus there's probably going to be a bit more sex, and less falling out of windows. But you never know.

Who is your “writing idol”? ie, who do you like and what is it about their writing that captures your soul?

I love Josh Lanyon and Neil Plakcy more than life itself. But Stephen King has owned my soul since I was 12 years old. I will always be wary of sink drains, mice, time travel, chattering teeth, dolls, clowns, lawnmowers and a million other mundane things because of him. He gets right inside your head, and somehow verbalises deep, primal fears you never knew you had.

What is your favorite plot line type?

In romance, I love stories about two strangers stuck together somewhere. Preferably in very close quarters. They can’t escape, they’re forced to clash, and hopefully somewhere down the line hate turns to lust.

What is a good villain?

In this book, my villain is someone I’m genuinely quite scared of. But he’s not one dimensional. He has hidden depths (though they are pretty damn hidden) which make him a little more complex and interesting. A villain has goals, fears and dreams, just like anyone else. He might be the villain in your story, but he’s the hero in his.

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?

Just make sure you finish. Don’t give up halfway through a book to work on another bright, exciting new idea. However tempting that is (and it always is). Finish if it kills you!

Excerpt from Northwest of Normal

Ben saw the lust in Murphy’s eyes. Ben couldn’t believe it was because of him. He saw it all written out on Murphy’s face even in the streetlights. In the bright motel room it would be obvious. Randall mustn’t see them yet. He’d know. Murphy agreed to smoke a cigarette before they went in.

“You want to share?” He offered Ben a cigarette from his crumpled pack.

No, Ben just wanted to watch. He hoped Murphy would take a long, deep drag on it and hollow out his cheeks again. He’d been seeing that image every time he closed his eyes for the past three days. Murphy shrugged and lit it. Ben was sure Murphy was taking tiny puffs on purpose. Ben didn’t normally go for smokers, but somehow, everything Murphy did looked so damned good.

“You just gonna stare at me?”

Ben blushed and nodded. Murphy blew smoke in his face.

As soon as they stepped inside the motel room, Randall grabbed his stuff, barely sparing them a glance. Randall handed the gun to Murphy, who took it awkwardly.

“You watch him. I don’t trust him. He might be thinking of running off.” Randall jabbed a thick finger into Murphy’s shoulder. “It is very fucking important that you don’t let him. You hear me? I’ll be back before you know it.” He pushed Murphy’s head hard in a gesture that was probably supposed to be affectionate. “Bye, love ya.”

“Love you too,” Murphy mumbled.

Randall let the door slam behind him. There was a moment of silence. Murphy pointed the gun at Ben’s head, looked deep into his eyes, and mouthed the word bang. Ben was surprised to find his cock twitch in pleasure, and he swallowed hard. There was a very good chance Murphy had no idea how sexy he looked doing that.

“Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just pleased to see me?” Ben asked.

The confusion on Murphy’s face was comical, and Ben grinned. Murphy wasn’t used to people flirting with him. For a second, a small part of his brain screamed at him not to flirt with an armed redneck. But Murphy was no normal redneck. Maybe there was no such thing.

“Is it loaded?”

Murphy pointed the gun carefully at the floor and opened the chamber to check for bullets. “Yeah, it is.”

Well, shit. Randall really was carrying around a loaded gun. Ben made a mental note to be more scared of him. He watched as Murphy made doubly sure he’d clicked on the safety, and then reached out to place the gun on the TV table.

“Wait,” said Ben. Murphy looked up, his gun hand frozen in midair. “Aren’t you gonna hold me hostage or anything?”

“Whaddaya mean?”

The crooked, nervous smile on Murphy’s face tugged on Ben’s heart. “I’m dangerous. I’m a flight risk. I might abscond at any moment. You have to keep me under control.”

“Oh yeah?”

Something flickered in Murphy’s eyes. Now he was getting it. Murphy kept hold of the gun and slowly approached Ben, backing him up against the wall. Ben closed his eyes. He heard a click near his ear, and something cold and metallic pushed up against his temple. The hard muzzle slid softly across his cheek and down to his mouth.

“Like this?”

Ben nodded. Murphy ran the gun slowly across his lips, then moved it down to his throat, shoving the muzzle under his jaw. It clicked again, and Ben opened his eyes.

“Want me to take out the bullets?” Murphy whispered into his ear. Then nipped his earlobe and slid one hand around the back of his neck, gripping hard.

Ben swallowed and ignored Murphy’s question. It might have been weird and dangerous, but it was more of a turn-on if it was loaded. He squeezed his eyes shut and concentrated on the sensation of the hard pistol traveling slowly down his neck, over his chest and stomach, and past the bottom of his crumpled T-shirt. The gun continued down until Murphy pressed it hard against Ben’s cock through his jeans. Ben ground his hips forward against it. Now he wondered if he’d made a mistake. The last thing he needed was his junk getting blown off before he’d used it with Murphy.

“Murph,” Ben panted breathlessly. “Murphy, stop.”

Murphy double-checked that the safety was on and threw the gun onto the bed. “We don’t have to play with that. We’ve got other stuff.”

“Like what?”

He shrugged. “We’ve got the rope.”

Ink Motions - Interview

How do you get an idea for your novel? It’s still a mystery to me. I never start out with just one idea. I know I want certain things to happen or I want to write certain scenes.

What is your writing style?  I create character sketches and the skeleton of a story. After that, my muse takes over and I just go along for the ride.

Who is the "Writing Muse" in your life? Nature, particularly mountains.

How many novels have you written, including all works-in-progress? Riverswept is my second novel. The first was written under my other name. I’ve also published a compilation of my poems and short stories that have appeared in literary journals.

Who is your "writing idol"? I.E. Who do you like and what is it about their writing that captures your soul? I love the work of Ron Rash, especially his novel One Foot in Eden. It’s an amazing, beautiful book. His writing inspires me. His first published works were poems and the language of the poet carries through in his fiction.

What is you favorite plot line type? I don’t have a favorite. Whatever suits the story and whatever works is what I like.

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write? Plant your butt in a chair and write.

What is a good villain? Readers should be able to empathize with some small part of a villain, otherwise he’s cardboard. We’re all human. We all have foibles.

HRriverswept 200by300

Blurb:

Molly is an up-and-coming PR rep for a mining company. Finn is the owner of an ecotourism business. She’s determined to make her client look good. He’s determined to shut them down. Pitted against Finn and his group of protesters, she begins to see the issue from a new point of view. When the two adversaries come together, they are swept away in a flood of passion.

Excerpt from Riverswept:

She couldn’t resist dropping by his house. The garage door was closed. No cars were parked in front of the house. Looking over her shoulder, Molly didn’t see anyone watching, so she crept into his yard and up the steps of his porch. She peeked into the windows. The house seemed empty. He must still be on that kayak excursion.

Feeling like a stalker, she bounded down the steps and headed into downtown Burns. She would stroll through town toward the river and back around to her cottage. She took her time, worried that the lightheadedness would return.

By the time she reached the water’s edge, dusk blanketed it, softening its surface. Molly squinted at the river. The only illumination was that of fireflies peppering the air with unholy green light. Moving near the launch site, she caught sight of something pale. It was Finn’s white T-shirt glimmering as he put away equipment in the MoRE shed. Molly made her way to him.

He stood stretching and slapping away mosquitoes. When he saw her, he hefted a coil of rope under his arm and tossed it into the shed. He shut the door, locked it, and turned to greet her. “Hey, I was getting ready to call y—”

She interrupted him with a deep kiss. A pleasant, throbbing ache had set up inside her. He could make it go away. She ran her hands up beneath his ponytail and freed it from its band. She let the silky gold strands stream through her fingers like a pirate gloating over handfuls of doubloons. Smiling, she held his face between her hands and kissed him hard.

“Here,” she said. “Now.”

“Whatever you say,” he murmured. Pressing himself against her, he ran his tongue along her earlobe. A mantle of dew covered their shoulders as Finn led her away from the shed to the river. Beneath the branches of an old pine tree, he laid her down on a bed of fragrant needles.

Ink Motions with Lynn Crain

tcinkmotions-sm3

Lynn

Lynn Crain realized at an early age she wanted to write. She took the long way to that goal by doing a variety of things like nursing, geologist, technical writer and computer manager. Even though she is no longer in the medical field, Lynn has studied natural medicine and remedies for years. She is currently getting her Ph.D. in natural medicine with an emphasis on historical medicine and is still utterly fascinated with all things medical. During her free time she weaves fantasy, futuristic and paranormal tales as well as erotic stories for various publishers. She lives in the very hot southwest with her husband, son, one dog, three cats and a snake named Sandune. She is a past board member of the Romance Writers of America, past VP of EPIC and current EPPIEs Chairman for EPIC.

She loves hearing from her readers at lynncrain@cox.net.

How do you get an idea for your novel?

In general, I get my ideas for novels everywhere. My husband often says he can’t take me anywhere because I’ll start yakking at him about something I just saw and how I can put it in a book.

For the book, Night of the Blue Moon, I was drawn into the story by a friend who had written book 1. I was enchanted and started playing the ‘what if’ game with their characters. Suddenly, I had a brother the girls didn’t know they had. Once I presented the ideas, my friends all tweaked their books to encompass what I wanted to do in book 4 of the Blue Moon Magic series.

What is your writing style?  Do you just sit down and write or do you create?

Wow. I never really thought of my writing style. I come in every morning the moment I wake up and look at emails for no longer than an hour. That includes any Facebook/Twitter time. Once that’s done, I pull up my latest work and try to put in at least 3-4 hours on that one story. If that story doesn’t do it for me, I pull up the next one in my queue and I normally have about five stories going at any one time.

BUT there have been times where I’ve just sat down and created without thought to anything else until the story was done. My all time record is writing about 13,500 words in a day. I was finishing up a short novella of about 25k. It was fun, exhilarating and extremely focused.

Who is the "Writing Muse" in your life?

I don’t really have a writing muse as most of the time, my writing is on. Only when life things get in the way do I have periods where I’m not writing. Otherwise, I’m always writing.

Music will get my creative juices going almost every time as it can compel me to write a difficult scene or put together something totally new.

How many novels have you written including all work in progresses you are currently working on?

Right now, I’m standing 21 published works, with the majority of them being novella length. I have a couple that are short stories in there as well.

As far as WIPs, I have 3 long novels that I’m working on, meaning 100K. Those are with my agent and if you love Scotsmen, you’ll love this series called The MacKenzie Clan. I’m also working on another 5 novellas and a handful of short stories plus one big series called The J.R. Chronicles. MOF, it already has its own website.

I guess you could say I love to be busy. LOL!

Who is your "writing idol"? I.E. Who do you like and what is it about there writing that captures your soul?

Oh geez, there are so many of them. I love Gini Koch, Linnea Sinclair and Jessica E. Subject for sci-fi romance. I love almost anything urban fantasy. I also love a lot of the classics like Edna Ferber, Jane Austin and Margaret Mitchell. I also read hardcore science fiction and right now I’m on a Craig Johnson, the Longmire series, kick as well.

But overall, there isn’t really and author I don’t like. I’ll give everyone a chance.

What is you favorite plot line type?

Another good question. I don’t really have a single favorite plot time. I love where the hero or heroine has hidden something from the other. I love the ones where one of the characters acts like they are the spouse or fiancée of the other. I like plots where they just meet normally and have the hots for each other.

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?

Don’t ever stop believing in yourself. Writing isn’t a flash-in-the-pan type of career but is one that grows slowly, over time and needs a lot of nurturing.

What is a good villain?

One you hate to love. Think about it…didn’t you have a love/hate relationship with Darth Vader? I know I did. Sure, there are those you really wouldn’t have anything to with at all yet, for me, I thought about what if I were the one to turn Darth Vader into a good guy.

Night of the Blue Moon

Blue Moon Magic, Book 4

One father.

Two mothers.

Four siblings.

One incredible story about that special night which changes them all. Forever.

Finding his true family, is one thing. Wanting something he couldn’t have another.

All his life he felt he hadn’t belonged but it wasn’t until Clarity Langford appeared did he know the truth of it. Once that truth was revealed there was no going back for Connor Angus, only forward. He discovers he is the long thought dead son of pack Elite leader, Charles Langford. And with that knowledge comes a family full of sisters, mystery and longing for things he’s not sure he has any right to obtain and one of those things is Cordelia Sinclair.

Excerpt:

Falling back into the kitchen cabinets, he briefly clutched his side. “Damn it, you’re just not going to give up easily, are you?”

“Why should I?” She eyed him cautiously.

“Because I could seriously hurt you.”

“Now why don’t you just give it your best shot then we’ll see just who gets hurt.”

The man slowly shook his head. “All right, now remember, you asked for it.” He threw a punch that landed squarely on the left side of her head.

Cordelia shook it off but it still left her ear ringing. Grabbing his other arm, she charged into his stomach with her head and flipped him over her back. He landed with a resounding thud on the floor next to the table and on top of the broken china. She was only able to stand there a moment, her sides heaving, when she was knocked off balance by his leg making a wide sweep. It almost knocked the air completely out of her but she managed to throw another punch on her way down.

He grabbed her fist and twisted her arm, picking her up and shoving her facedown once again on the table.

“You have no right being on top of me, so get the fuck off.” She gasped for breath, his added weight making it hard to even move a centimeter.

“You know, I think you’re a little bit sexy when you’re pissed like this. I can smell your pheromones. You want me.” He took a long, slow whiff of her, as if to imprint her on his memory.

“I don’t even know you!” She screamed and tried to buck him off her even as her nipples hardened under her. Heat swelled in the V of her thighs and feelings began to overwhelm her. Feelings that she had never felt before in all her life. Not even with her husband. It was like her body already knew this man intimately.

He leaned down into her softness, and she could feel his body coming to life. His hardness pressed into her butt and all she wanted to do was to get herself out of her pajamas. Thank God, she had decided to sleep with them on last night.

“If I didn’t know better, I’d say that you like it this way.” He ground his body into hers a little more. “Take that back, I know you like it. I can smell it on you and your wet body is telling me exactly what you want. Your body is betraying you.”

Enraged, she slammed her head against his nose. “You don’t know me well enough to know how I like it. And you don’t know anything about my body.”

She heard him groan as she cracked his face. Still, he wouldn’t let go.

“It’s not going to be that easy,” he whispered close to her ear. He started to rock his now very hard cock into the gentle curve of her ass as he rained light, feathery kisses on her neck.

God, he almost had her undone. “What are you doing to me?”

“What do you want me to do to you?” he questioned and flipped her over to stare into her face. Reaching down, he placed his hands on either side of her head and pulled her up to meet him. Lips and tongues met forcefully, pulling and tasting and testing. Gently, he nipped at her bottom lip.

He felt so good up against her. Greedily, she put her hands under his T-shirt and felt the muscles. There was no way that she could have beat him no matter how hard she tried. Letting her hands roam up his chest, she plucked his nipples until they were hard, delighting in the sound he made.

“God, woman, you make me crazy.” Reaching for the collar of her shirt, he ripped it down the center, revealing her taut breasts.

“That’s not fair,” she whispered. “Take this off.” Cordelia tugged at his T-shirt until she pulled it over his head. He looked at her for a long moment, before leaning down to take her nipple in his mouth. She could see the bruises spreading across his cheeks and knew she must have some too. The original question of who he was floated into her mind, but at this very moment she didn’t give a damn.
