An unexpected encounter leads to a lasting passion…

Lila Jarvis wasn’t prepared to be involved in a rescue after a long day at work. The man she saves is even more surprising and she has no idea what she is in for. From the moment they meet until she goes looking for him to check on him, she is thrown for a loop on what to do with Driscoll. She knows he is a famous singer, yet it’s the man who is tender, open and downright weird—he calls it eccentric—who has her coming back for more. He is like nothing she has experienced before. Lila has no idea where things are going, but she is willing to hold on for the ride with the man who pushes all her buttons.

Driscoll Jacobs knows that when life provides you with an opportunity you take it, make it yours and make sure it never leaves. No woman has made him feel like Lila does—on edge one moment then at ease the next. The sassy woman is a challenge he is looking forward to getting to know better. As he does he finds himself in circumstances he’s never been in before. She is in his blood and he doesn’t plan to let her go.

It started as a meeting neither expected, but with a determined man it will become much more than an unexpected encounter…

Teasers - Driscollism

unexpectedencounter_800Today's Teasers is a little different. I'm gonna use something that I call a 'Driscollism'. This comes from the hero in my book Unexpected Encounter (Singleton, #4) which releases on this Friday, July 18. In the book my hero says some...lets just say his views on things are interesting. Here is one of the things he said.

Driscollism

When someone tells me I’m going to fail, it makes me even more determined to succeed then flip them off when I do. - said by Driscoll Jacobs from Unexpected Encounter by Taige Crenshaw

I love this Discosllism because one of the things I believe is when something is tough or hard I won’t let it defeat me. I dig in and work harder to get it done.

Interview with Author Daisy Banks

How do you get an idea for your novel?

For this novel, the process was a little odd. I wrote the beginning of a story and after about four chapters, I looked at it and realized I needed to write what had happened before the events in the chapters I’d written for things to make sense. The story led me back to the events in A Perfect Match.

This tale is a step beyond my normal romance genres. It is a cross genre kind of mix, futuristic, with a splash of sci-fi, and some politics. Events push the characters on a journey of self-discovery and an exploration of their partnership. I like to think this book remains a love story throughout.

What is your writing style?  Do you just sit down and write or do you create character sketches, outlines, or notes?

Most of my stories begin from pictures in my head. I see a scene happening, a bit like being at the cinema with the sound turned down. I don’t usually hear the words but the images are very clear. Usually they make me wonder how the individuals I see got into the situation I see them in, arguing or involved in some activity. Once I’ve seen the images, that’s when I can sit down and write.

A Perfect Match was a little different as I saw what comes next before I found the characters in the story. Once I could see the two lead characters, the story developed.

I rarely make notes, occasionally I will if something is very detailed or complicated. Usually I write until I am too tired to stop or the words won’t flow any more.

Next day, I will read what I’ve written and carry on from the point where I stopped before, though I don’t edit for things until well after that stage. Editing takes place once I’ve got to the end unless something is very troublesome and I might decide I’ve taken the wrong path with the story and rewrite from a previous point. I like to allow the characters to lead me. In the past, I’ve found when I go badly wrong, or the story dries up, it’s because I have tried to push the characters to a place they don’t want to be. Sometimes they will even tell me to watch what I’m setting up for them.

Who is the "Writing Muse" in your life? I.E. who gets your juices flowing when you are blocked?

If I am stuck on something or am in need of a bit of inspiration, I take a walk down by the river Severn that usually helps. I often listen to classical music when I am working. There isn’t a person who motivates me to write.

How many novels have you written including all work in progresses you are currently working on?

I have written nine or ten novels, two were learning pieces and remain something I may or may not look at again in the future. There are another two stories I might work on further to get them ready to submit to a publisher, or not.

I have six currently published works, three novels and three novellas. My latest book A Perfect Match, released with Taliesin Publishing is my first ninety thousand-word work. I have two new contracted novels with Lyrical Press one of which will be released later this year and the other next year. I am in the process of writing a historical romance with a big chunk of adventure. There is also a sensual piece I will be submitting to a publisher late this summer and a free read I am contributing to a collection.

Who is your "writing idol"? I.E. Who do you like and what is it about there writing that captures your soul?

I am a huge fan of Tolkien, all of it, everything, The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Silmarillion, Farmer Giles of Ham, Gawain and the Green Knight, and the adventures of Tom Bombadil. I love them all. I delight in losing myself to another world.

I enjoy many different types of stories from classical legends to murder mysteries. I a big fan of the fantasy genre and I enjoy all kinds of romance. Poetry remains an interest of mine and I find the work of Keats speaks to my soul. I think I have always been a romantic at heart.

What is you favorite plot line type?

Good overcomes evil. The brave of heart, spirit and mind, gain the rewards they deserve. True love wins out despite the odds. I enjoy all these in the many different ways they are treated by lots of different authors.

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?

Do it. Beware of your motivation. If you want to write primarily for financial gain, unless you are very lucky, you might be disappointed. Don’t give up your day job until you are truly financially secure.

Use critique partners and groups to help you polish your work, learn how the publishing industry works, and be prepared to deal with rejection.

In my humble opinion, the best way to become a writer is to write.

What is a good villain?

Ah, how I have struggled with this. I have had critique partners almost in tears, either laughing or crying at my attempts at a villain. Finally, when I did what a dear friend once told me to, ‘let it go, write it and let the chips fall where they may’, I got a villain down on the page. I loathe him, he disgusts me, he is unutterably vile, and there are times I am so sorry for him I could cry.

That’s the kind of villain I think people like to read, someone who has their reasons for behaving as they do. A villain must have a personality to be credible.

Thanks so much for the interview questions. I enjoyed them.

An Excerpt From: A Perfect Match by Daisy Banks

Published by Taliesin Publishing.

“Outrageous! It’s not possible. I’m sworn to the gods. He can’t do it.” Anwell babbled to her personal slave. “Raisa, are you certain? Is it a genuine warning?”

“Yes, I fear so, mistress. Before you retire tonight, you will receive a direct command from His Eminence, Lord Chardel. Not even the Mother of the Temple can gainsay such a decree.”

Anwell’s stomach churned. She shook her head until her long earrings rattled. This isn’t true. Her knees wilted and forced her to sit on the edge of her narrow bed. “I can’t think any of the Carnag would allow him to make such an edict.” She laced her fingers together as if in prayer. “Was there no one in the assembly who’d dispute on my behalf?”

Raisa’s eyes gleamed in the low light. The old Netherling sat beside her, clasped her hands, and squeezed hard. “You were not mentioned by name there. It would have made little difference if you had been. All of them are fearful they may lose their place. Lord Chardel becomes more erratic by the day. I’m afraid many will go along with any of his wishes, rather than risk his displeasure. You have no choice, my lady. You cannot refuse the explicit command of the leader of the Carnag. To do so might endanger your life. Your family may suffer, if they attempt to gainsay His Eminence.” Raisa’s dark gaze held hers. “You must obey.”

“But I’ve never even met Commander Varon. Everyone knows arranged marriages were prohibited years ago. They make a mockery of all the Temple encourages.”

“Mistress, it makes no difference.” Raisa spoke quick, so soft and low Anwell strained to hear. “His Eminence believes his views challenged by Commander Varon. There is a history to their relationship. Lord Chardel doesn’t trust the commander, and to defend his rule, he has gifted the hero of the Carnag a youthful, noble wife. You are the commander’s reward for the latest water discovery, and…” Raisa glanced toward the closed door. “You are meant to give the commander the early opportunity to breed with a true-blood Astan female.”

“Breed?” Her heart rhythm raced.

“Yes. You’ll no longer be a member of the Temple or under the charge of its rules of chastity.” Raisa leaned closer, her voice lower still. “I have heard whispers that in private, Lord Chardel is outraged Commander Varon boasts of breeding with his Netherling companion, and worse: the commander has openly encouraged other young members of the Carnag to do the same with theirs. So, to stem what might become a tide of rebellion, as well as counteract the thought of interbreeding, His Eminence is determined to prove Astan females are quite capable of successfully producing healthy offspring.”

“But you know it’s not true,” she said. “Despite all our prayers in the Temple, birthrates have declined to near naught in the last twenty years. Many Astan wives have tried and failed. Some have died in the process.”

Raisa nodded. “But remember, they are all far older than you. Any female who devotes the first twenty-five years of her adulthood to the Temple is bound to be less fertile than one who is in the flush of youth. I say it is only common sense, despite Astan ideals. Commander Varon has openly encouraged all the younger males in the Carnag to experiment with impregnating their pleasure slaves. He says many of the young Netherlings are intelligent therefore they are perfect breeding stock, as they are ready to reproduce early.”

Her icy fingers locked together and shook, along with the rest of her. “What if I don’t breed?”

“We’d better see you do.”

Desperate for divine intervention, she clutched the Temple amulet against her breast. “But I don’t want a child yet, not until my service to the Temple is fulfilled. My life is given to the gods! It is the law.”

Ink Motions - Interview

How do you get an idea for your novel?

Ideas come to me from everywhere, including dreams, news blurbs, historical nonfiction and snippets of conversation. The idea for Touch of Salar was inspired by my love of massages and fantasies I had about what a magical healer could do with his hands.  The important thing is to look for the synergy of idea and character. A great idea is nothing until the right character comes along to claim it.

What is your writing style?  Do you just sit down and write or do you create character sketches, outlines or notes?

When first starting a story, I totally wing it.  Usually a character taps me on the shoulder and says, "Time to write my story" and I just start spinning it out. Setting and conflict flow out of the character's personality and flaws.  I do make copious notes and then when the plot demands that I start making sense of things, I'll work out a simple outline, but those change all the time.

Who is the "Writing Muse" in your life? I.E. who gets your juices flowing when you are blocked?

I don't want to jinx myself, but I very rarely get blocked anymore. Writing is like breathing for me.  The trick is to develop a schedule and stick to it, come hell, headache or bad mood.  But when I do get momentarily stuck, I get up and take the dog for a walk.  So maybe Lazlo the Border collie is my muse? Is that sad? Should I say something sexy like Lenny Kravitz?

How many novels have you written including all work in progresses you are currently working on?

I've finished five novels and I'm kind of embarrassed to say how many first and second drafts I have waiting around (more than a dozen, less than fifty).  Touch of Salar is my first to be published under the name Alexis Duran.

Who is your "writing idol"? I.E. Who do you like and what is it about their writing that captures your soul?

Tom Robbins. (Jitterbug Perfume, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues) He was the writer who really inspired me to trust my own voice.  He's totally silly and heartbreakingly profound all that same time. He writes with a joyful, reckless abandon. I never want his stories to end and I want to live in the worlds he creates.  Doesn’t get much better than that.

What is you favorite plot line type?

I love stories of "ordinary" people finding their special power or destiny.  I write fantasy, so usually there is magic involved, but the true power comes from within.  We all know magic has a price, and the hero has to overcome his fatal flaws in order to seize the elixir.  Combine this with a story of redemption, a villain on the brink of self-annihilation in desperate need of a hero to save him, and you've got some seriously hot chemistry.

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?

The only way to learn to write is to write. So write, write, write. No matter what your circumstances or any discouraging comments you get, just keep writing.  Join a supportive critique group, attend workshops, listen, edit and submit. Never surrender, never give up!

What is a good villain?

The best villains are alluring in some way.  They're attractive, confidant, mysterious, intelligent and oh so sexy. That's what makes them dangerous!  The classic example is Count Dracula. A good villain doesn't have to use violence to subdue his enemies.  Dracula's victims invite him in to their bedrooms. Readers want to be swept away into the dark world of the handsome stranger.

Touch of Salar3_coverin

About Touch of Salar

In a world ruled by tyrannical kings and fickle gods, the young monk M'lan finds himself at the center of royal intrigue as his healing powers attract the attention of his superiors. When he learns the handsome warrior whose body he’s tending to is not only a noble, but a king's assassin, any attachment to him might prove fatal. Despite the danger, he can't stop himself from falling in love. Can he risk the abandon of passion when a slip of the tongue might force his lover to execute him?

Major Jamil Jarka comes to the temple

Excerpt from Chapter 2 of Touch of Salar

Jamil strode through the cool temple corridors and noted that his hamstring had loosened and there was no sensation of a catch as he walked. He’d had the symptoms since that day fourteen passages ago when his instructor had struck him down. Maybe there was something to this healing-energy business after all. His mood felt lighter than it had in ages as he entered the treatment room, once again awash with the amber tones of dawn.

The monk M’lan stood just out of reach of the sun’s rays, head bowed. Strands of blond hair glinted as a gentle breeze stirred them. He did not react as Jamil entered, and he kept his eyes down, as was proper. This gave Jamil a chance to observe him more closely. The monk had been in his thoughts since the other morning, as a constant irritation and source of pointless distraction. All harmless enough, though time moved ever slower as he waited impatiently to feel the monk’s hands on him again.

Today the monk’s face was expressionless, a mask of inner peace and outward aloofness. Probably the sensual impact of the treatment was an inadvertent side effect. Jamil felt slightly disappointed and wondered if he could cast a ripple across the smooth facade.

“Greetings of the dawn, M’lan,” Jamil said. He was rewarded with a quick, surprised look, a flash of umber eyes that became cold and distant as they lit on Jamil’s smile.

With eyes down again, the monk asked, “How are you feeling, Major?”

“Sore. You did hurt me, as promised. But that old sword wound has ceased to bother me, so it was worth it. Maybe today you can heal my hand.” He held out his injured right hand and tried to flex the fingers. They bent reluctantly, and he winced as he tried to close them farther.

“That, Major, will take time. As I said, we must start at the surface and work our way down.”

“That seems backward to me. The sword wound on my leg happened when I was a lad. This is fresh.”

“It is the depth of the injury, not the age, that counts.”

“You’re the expert,” Jamil conceded. He let his robe drop and lay again on the table, determined this time to relax and not fight whatever sensations came, as they appeared to aid his healing.

Again a charge jolted him as M’lan laid hands on him, and then a warm tingling sensation along every nerve in his skin as fingers slid, smoothed, and dug into the seemingly endless knots in his muscles. Today the treatment was more businesslike, though the monk’s touch was pleasant and, in an odd way, comforting. Jamil felt like a pet cat being stroked by an attentive master.

Master. This image made him tense up somewhat. If he relaxed too much, the monk might gain the upper hand. That was ridiculous, but Jamil had rarely allowed anyone full control of his body. It seemed to him that they’d both decided to retreat from the dangerous territories they’d so briefly touched on the previous day.

The monk was focusing on Jamil’s neck today, and the pain was again intense. His thumb dug into the muscle at the base of Jamil’s nape until a trigger point there suddenly gave way.

With this release, Jamil flashed back to the fight with a southern rebel. In the tight quarters of a cave, they’d fallen to hand-to-hand combat, and the enemy had gotten his huge hands around Jamil’s neck, choking the life out of him. That was one of three times in his life when he was sure he would die. He still remembered the sensation of struggling for air, life fading away.

The monk’s hands began to shake, and he gasped. His hands slid from Jamil’s body.

Jamil instantly missed their warmth. He waited and then asked, with his face still down, “Calling on the healing energies again?”

“Yes.”

“You can really tell that the bones there were bruised once?”

“There is a great deal of scar tissue built up there, and three of the vertebrae in the neck are out of alignment.”

“That too was long ago.”

“You seem to hold on to your injuries, Major.”

“Not on purpose, I assure you.”

The monk made no further comment. He pressed tentatively on the neck for a while longer and then asked Jamil to lie on his back. Jamil rolled over and stared at the arched ceiling. A fresco in muted colors depicted waterfalls descending over boulders in a lush landscape similar to the one that surrounded the monastery. The painting was ancient. The entire place was a remnant of an empire long since fallen.

The monk was working on his hand after all. He held it palm up in both of his and toyed with the fingers, then began to circle his thumbs in the center of the palm. There was no pain, the touch gentle, and for some reason this felt more intimate than all his previous poking and prodding. Something about the hands—holding hands, simply innocent and yet bonding.

Jamil again relaxed and felt blood flow to his penis. It swiftly stiffened and became erect. He chuckled and said, “Take care of that for me, monk.”

The monk’s thumbs stabbed deeply into Jamil’s so recently shattered bones, bringing tears to his eyes, but it did nothing to discourage his lust. He watched M’lan’s face. The monk was staring at him with an icy expression—a monk’s haughtiness that didn’t suit him in the least.

Jamil said, “You would like to, wouldn’t you?”

“It is forbidden.”

“Forbidden fruit is the sweetest, or haven’t you heard, locked away in your temple?”

The monk’s breath caught, and he looked away, then back at Jamil’s cock, then at his face. Jamil grinned. His suspicions were confirmed. The monk was not beyond normal desires. To his surprise, M’lan first raised Jamil’s hand and pressed cool, moist lips to his knuckles and fingertips.

Ink Motions - Interview with Houston Havens

How do you get an idea for your novel?

My stories come from inspiration and imagination.

What is your writing style?  Do you just sit down and write or do you create

A little of both. Once the idea hits I’ll think it through and then start writing.

Who is the "Writing Muse" in your life? I.E. who gets your juices flowing

Unlike most, I don’t have one author or any particular genre that ‘get’s my juices flowing’ like I said … it’s inspiration and my imagination that work for me.

How many novels have you written including all work in progresses you are currently working on? 12 full length novels. 5 straight Romances and 7 erotic romances.

Who is your "writing idol"? I.E. Who do you like and what is it about there writing that captures your soul?

I’m not the type to have idols … but I do enjoy Kim Mullican (Immortal Decision), Suzy Knight (Love and War), Matt Holgate (The Dim Realm series), and Anita Cox (The Dirty White Candy series) each and every one of them capture me with their style, voice and writing talents as storytellers.

What is you favorite plot line type?

As you see from the excerpts of Sinful Surrender I can’t just favor one TYPE of plotline and stick to it … my tag line is: WHY BE TEMPTED BY ONE MAN’S SEDUCTION WHEN YOU CAN BE LOVED BY TWO …  that says it all about me. I can’t have just ONE favorite PLOT LINE … like I can’t have just one favorite GENRE. I’m an Irish lass that can’t be bound by ONE THING ~ our minds don’t work like that. The heavens are my limit … I think … unless I get there and see I can push that as well … and being Irish, you know I will.

In Sinful Surrender I have three plotlines braided together… I have the Dirt Dwellers Underworld story intertwined with the Airbornes erotic love story and then I have the series plotline … and I love them all … until I get to book two.

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?

This is a double edge sword. You have to love, I mean really love to write if you want to turn writing into a business. It is nothing like it is romantically portrayed in the movies.

As a business it calls for SACRIFICE on and at every level of the life you live right now. Your daily wear will need to be fifty times stronger and thicker than any Black Knight’s metal suit….trust me, the shine and it’s smooth surface will tarnished and dented within minutes of your walking through that portal from hobby to professional author.

Good luck to you.

What is a good villain?

In Drakker and Arlo’s world, women are so rare the men have accepted a polyandrous lifestyle. Excerpt

“I never do what’s anticipated.” He pulled her closer into his chest and whispered in her ear. “It would make me boring and predictable.” He slipped his hands under her blouse and stroked his fingertips in seductive circles over her flesh. The passion in his eyes grew hotter. “I’ve desired you from the moment you walked through my front door.”

She widened her eyes in mock shock then shot her gaze over to Arlo. His raised brow and cocked head made her turn a frown back in Logan’s direction. “You said this was a game of truth.” She placed her hands over his, keeping them just below her breasts. “That’s a lie.”

“No, it isn’t.”

“Logan, it was quite obvious to us all that morning the only thing you wanted to do to me was to interrogate me.” She looked at Arlo again. He shrugged and started singing another song. Coward. He was avoiding voicing his opinion.

“Then you’re all blind, because the first thing I truly wanted was to kiss those perfect lips. The second thing was to interrogate that succulent mouth of yours to make it tell me the truth about you.” He glided his touch around to the sides of her breasts.

Fay liked how his hands caressed her, and she wasn’t about to tell him to stop. His touch created a fire deep inside her, something she’d longed for all her life.

“Fay, a person can be suspicious of someone, but it doesn’t necessarily negate a very strong attraction to them. How do you think most assassins get in close for a kill? Their targets find them very attractive.”

“Hmm, didn’t think of that. What you say is true.” She felt his fingers stroke down her lower back to play with the laces holding her blouse closed. A subtle heat warmed her pussy. “I’ve known a few women who loved their husbands but didn’t trust them to be faithful.”

“See.” In one swift motion, he pulled at the laces and removed her blouse.

“Logan,” Fay whispered. Arlo’s soft singing in the background reminded her they weren’t alone.

He trailed his seductive touch to her bra straps. Slipping his fingertips beneath the material he worked the silky strips off her shoulders. She crossed her arms over her breasts to stop him from removing it.

“Logan, we can’t—”

He swept her deeper into his arms and stopped her words by pressing his mouth to her ear. “Tell me true…do you desire me?”

Without breaking his hold, she was able to brace a short distance between them, just enough to gaze into his eyes. “Truth?”

“Nothing but the truth shall ever pass between us.” He tilted his head forward and down, closing the space between them. He brushed his mouth softly against hers, merging their heat, and then did it again. He licked the seam of her lips, and she couldn’t help herself. It was a physical need. She granted his tongue entry.

Her bra fell free before she circled her arms around him. His touch ignited her flesh as he moved his fingers to the front of her jeans and worked her zipper until her pants dropped to the ground. “The truth is—” she murmured at the release of his lips.

“The truth,” he whispered in her ear. “Even though I fear my knees will fail me should you tell me I disgust you.” Logan cupped each breast before dropping his hands to stroke several gentle passes over her ass. He kissed and caressed, roaming his hands over her, although he did take care not to touch the area of her wound.

She stroked her nails up his back in wanton need, realizing if she were honest with herself, she felt the same desire for him she’d felt for Arlo and Drakker. “If my heart were to speak the truth, it would say you grabbed my sexual interest the moment I saw you in those tight white pants and red silk shirt.”

Her remark brought a proud smile to his lips. “Okay…so my clothes got you heated up.”

“No, it was the hard body beneath those clothes.”

“So…when did I capture your heart?”

“Honestly?”

“Honest.”

“When you became my hero.”

“I’m your hero? How? When?”

She smiled up at him. “Escaping the Nike silo. I still can’t believe you carried me all that way to safety.”

“How do you know that?”

“Whenever I woke up you were there, and Chandra confirmed it when I asked her.”

“Ah.” He smiled then frowned. “That was all it took?”

“Yes.”

“Funny, it happened for me then as well.”

“It did?”

“Yep, I knew in my gut I already loved you when you admitted you risked your life for me. That’s when I knew I couldn’t live without you. Hell, I didn’t want to ever let you go. It’s why I wouldn’t let anyone else carry you. You were mine. I knew somewhere within you, you had to love me. For you to sacrifice yourself like that…you had to love me.” Logan picked her up and carried her toward Arlo. “Honor me, brother. If you’re leg isn’t too bad, join me in pleasuring our woman tonight.”

Ink Motions with Morticia Knight

tcinkmotions-sm3

M/M Erotic Romance author Morticia Knight enjoys a good saucy tale – after all, who doesn’t? Since she loves several genres, you may find your heroes in a contemporary, historical, BDSM or sci-fi setting. One of her passions is bringing people's fantasies to life on the page, because life is too short for even one boring moment. Her stories are volcanic in heat, deep in emotion, and sprinkled with doses of humor.

When not indulging in her obsession for books, she loves the outdoors, film and music. The Pacific Northwest is the ideal spot to enjoy both hiking and beachcombing. Once upon a time she was the singer in an indie rock band that toured the West Coast and charted on U.S. college radio. She now resides on the northern coast of Oregon, where the constant rain and fog remind her of visits to family in England and Scotland when she was a child.

She is currently working on the Gin & Jazz series about the glitz and glamour of 1920’s Hollywood and additional installments of the Uniform Encounters series, with a new series about those luscious men in uniform coming out later this year.

How do you get an idea for your novel?

It’s a combination of the things that drive me personally, whether it’s music, mystery, life’s challenges or a message that I want to convey through my character’s experiences. The romance drives everything I write, so a lot of it comes from creating a dynamic spark between two people. I love the slow burn that ignites into an out of control inferno. Wow – there’s a whole pile of cliché’s  right there – but I still love ‘em.

What is your writing style?  Do you just sit down and write or do you create

I have a basic synopsis so there’s a beginning, a middle and an end. I know who my characters are in essence, but the same way I would in real life, I get to know them better the longer we’re together. I need to fall in love with my men before they can fall in love with each other. Once I reach that critical point, the stories write themselves. Getting there is the challenge!

Who is the "Writing Muse" in your life? I.E. who gets your juices flowing when

Pretty much any really hot guy *wink*. I will sometimes write to a photo of someone compelling, or a celebrity, but the majority of my characters are invented in my head.

How many novels have you written including all work in progresses you are currently working on?

There are fifteen available now, with two set to be released in the next couple of months. I’m working on another currently that will be out in September. So far, most of them have been from the Gin & Jazz series and the Uniform Encounters series, however, I do have two new series starting up in October. *grins*

Who is your "writing idol"? I.E. Who do you like and what is it about there writing that captures your soul?

My first writing love is Stephen King. A true romantic, that one. But seriously, he has such an original crazy mind and a great sense of humor. I was able to relate to him more than most of the authors I was reading at the time.

What is you favorite plot line type?

I love unexpected twists  - so mysteries and action books are a fave. But I also like hurt/comfort themes where one character has to overcome a trauma and finds the perfect person who is able to look past whatever it is to love them unconditionally. Sigh…

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?

Write. And Read. Then write some more and more and more. Keep going until you stop hating it. Then keep writing some more and read some more. This may come across as sarcastic, but it is so freakin’ true. If I had finished even one of the myriads of stories I started but let fester for years, I could have probably been published a long time ago. Because I would have found out that I could finish one, and I would’ve had the confidence to write another one until they got good. Instead, I kept procrastinating and making excuses, which was very silly when I look back on it.

What is a good villain?

To really make him pack a punch, he has to possess genuinely redeeming qualities that give you a false sense of security. My acting teacher used to always say that if we were going to play a serial killer, we had to portray the moments where he bends over to coo and pet some kittens. Then, when he kills his victims, it makes him that much more terrifying.

Will Carmichael, an impossibly handsome silent film star, longs for the broodingly intense director André Chenard. Can they find their way to one another despite the hidden perils of the prohibition era?

Will Carmichael lives a carefree and fun-filled life as one of Global Studio’s most popular motion picture stars. Young and stunningly attractive, he could have any man he wants. However, the only one he has any interest in is the only one who won’t have anything to do with him.

André Chenard is Global Studio’s newest director. A proponent of the newly introduced Russian method of acting, he aspires to create true art through the films he directs. Not interested in wasting his time on frivolous pursuits, he spurns Will’s constant attempts to catch his attention. Although André can’t stop thinking about the gorgeous man, his initial meeting with Will leads him to believe that he is too shallow for serious consideration.

Resigned to the fact that André will never be his, Will is determined to enjoy himself to the fullest at his favourite speakeasy and pansy club. When his carousing becomes out of control and he’s injured, André steps in to help. As a result, they each discover that there is much more to the other than they had originally assumed.

Right when it seems they have found their way to one another, an outside threat drives a wedge between them. As a result, they may have more to worry about than lost love—the threat could be to their very lives.

Reader Advisory: This book contains a scene of male ménage Ã  trois.

Publisher's Note: This book is best read in sequence as part of a series but can be read as a standalone.

Excerpt:

Will sat at the side of the set going over the description in the script of his next scene. It was Friday, and they had managed to get a lot filmed during the week. André was incredibly pleased—he had told Will over and over that Will was perfect for the part, that he was so relieved he hadn’t let his stubbornness get in the way.

Their Saturday night had stretched into Sunday morning until it became Sunday evening. They had both reluctantly parted yet knew it was the right thing. It was vital they both remain rested for the emotional journey of filming both André’s motion picture and Will’s first foray into something serious.

Will squirmed in his chair, watching André and the production designer go over some final details for the day’s planned shoot. The twisty sensation Will had endured in his stomach all morning came back to remind him of what he needed to face. It was the first of the murderous rage scenes. As a man who prided himself on keeping things fun and light, he was worried he would fail. That he would prove to André that he really wasn’t gifted as an actor.

Of course you’re not gifted, old bean. How could I have been so idiotic?

New emotions sneaked their way into his gut to join the others. Now he was irritated. He wasn’t sure at what or at whom—just irritated. Then there was the theme of the film. Stupid. Part of him didn’t want to acknowledge that he feared he was the one that was stupid, not the script. He simply couldn’t imagine why André had to make it all so violent and depressing. André claimed that there was a redeeming message of hope at the end, but Will had yet to uncover it. Of course, that was the biggest problem. He wasn’t sure he understood half of what was going on and he was an educated man after all.

In a short while, Will would be expected to tear headlong into a man turned monster. To frighten audiences with the ‘depths of his soul’, as André had phrased it.

Good Lord. I have no idea what he means.

He was absolutely terrified that André was about to witness his pathetic attempts at externalised emoting and never want to work with him again. It was all confused inside of him. He wanted André the genius director, but he wanted André the friend and lover too. It was too much to handle all at once.

“Will? Are you ready?”

He peered up into André’s kind face and swallowed reflexively, beads of sweat on his forehead already threatening to destroy the makeup woman’s handiwork. He stood up a bit too fast and almost knocked the wood and canvas chair over. Steadying it with his hand, he fell back on what he knew. He laughed, joked.

“When am I not? Especially for you, André.”

He’d said the last part winking, and he detected the slightest frown on André’s brow.

“Should we go over again what the inner struggle is doing to Hans’ soul?”

“Oh, no, old bean. I think dear Hans and I have it well in hand.”

Cringing inwardly at his word choice, he realised he hadn’t called André ‘old bean’ since before they’d been intimate for the first time. Will watched in dismay as André cupped his own face, then ran his hands over the top of his head, sighing as he did. André still didn’t speak, but took a deep breath, seeming to steady himself.

“We don’t have to film right now, Will. I would rather we took our time and got it right. If you’d like—“

“What are you talking about? Of course we have to film, everyone’s here! I’m not a complete dolt, I have acted before.”

Will found his irritation growing into what might become true anger. He didn’t want to be angry at André—he only wished he could muster some of that ire for his character’s scene. He held it in, searching for something light he could say to defuse both of their frustrations.

“I’m serious, Will, it won’t bother me if you need more time.”

“Bah. I’m anxious to be in your wondrous masterpiece. Don’t allow yourself to worry over me.” Will leaned in to speak quieter. “You can give me a special reward later if I do well.”

Will gave him another wink, and was startled at the displeased expression on André’s face. He knew the director liked to keep work and personal lives separate, yet it was already so intertwined between them, he couldn’t imagine how a small jest could be a problem. Even though André had warned him that he thought it would be best if they only got together on non-work nights, they hadn’t been very stringent in following that rule. Even if they had only had a dinner followed by a tantalising kiss afterwards, they had spent every evening—and a couple of nights—together since filming had begun.

André continued to stare at him and Will’s discomfort grew. There was obviously some sort of inner conflict going on within the man and Will was worried about what that might mean. After a few very awkward minutes, he had a frightening thought that André might give up on him completely.

“All right, Will.” His tone was even, almost quiet. “If you say you’re ready, I need to trust that you are. Let’s go then.”

Excerpt:

Another twenty yards and she’d be out of the darkness of the trees and almost to the sidewalk, within reach of the light from the streetlamps.

A figure stepped out from behind a large oak, directly into Ilona’s path.

Ilona stopped and searched for a way around.

“What are you doing?” a rough voice growled.

Ilona recognized it immediately, even before she registered Archer’s face.

“It’s none of your business what I’m doing,” she said.

He moved closer. “You’re making it goddamned impossible to protect you.”

“You can’t protect me.”

His jaw tightened, and he glared. “What in the hell do you think I’ve been doing?”

“I’m honestly not sure.”

His voice rose. “You’d be lying frozen dead in a gutter right now if it wasn’t for me. You saw what happened in the shelter—you’d have been attacked by now if I hadn’t been around.”

Her tone was quiet, calm. “I know how you scared them away.”

“I told you I have a talent for creating fear. It comes in useful.”

“But you don’t like it.”

He said nothing.

“And I know you’ve been around,” she said.

He raised his eyebrows as if she was being slow.

“Before you asked me if I was lost,” she said. “You were there—when the car hit me.”

His expression sobered.

She waited for a response.

Finally, he said, “I’ve been around.”

“Will you answer one question? And be honest?”

“I give as much honesty as I can.”

Her lips curved a little. That was perhaps the most honest response he had yet given.

She moved closer, and he backed away.

“No,” she said.

He stopped.

“When you turned the corner and asked if I was lost,” she said, “you leaned your shoulder on the wall. How did you do that?”

His eyebrows pulled together.

“You’re really good at it,” she said. “It took me awhile to realize you never actually touch anything, that you stay out of the light, that you don’t get cold, your breath doesn’t come out in puffs in the cold like everyone else’s, you never let anyone close, near enough to realize you have no scent, to feel the static when you get too close.”

He took a step back, as if in self-defense.

“Don’t try to lie anymore,” she said. “I know what you are.”

Ink Motions Interview:

How do you get an idea for your novel?

The idea for this novel came up while I was researching past celestial impacts with Earth. The most famous ones are associated with extinction level events. But there were many more, including an impact that may have released the Greenland Ice Sheet quite some time ago, changing the global climate for centuries to follow. I did not want to write a story all about that. But what if a moderately civilized human culture existed at the time, back before any known civilization, and vanished because of such an event—what could happen if archaeologists found traces? From there, two archaeologists at odds with each other about how to treat and analyze the findings were a perfect start for conflict-driven romance.

What is your writing style?  Do you just sit down and write or do you create character sketches, outlines, or notes?

I go back and forth between planning and doing. Before I start a story, which is a big time commitment, I generally have an opportunity to do some sketches and outlining. But once I start setting out the scenes, I don't always use those sketches and outlines, depending on what I find in the characters' voices. From there, I outline and re-outline, go back to writing, and keep circling, trying to fix my bearings and see the story I'm creating, as well as the story I'm subconsciously trying to create. It’s a wonderful process, but hard to fully explain.

Who is the "Writing Muse" in your life? I.E. who gets your juices flowing when you are blocked?

Fortunately, there are a host of candidates. Thirty minutes in a hot tub can do the trick. Pink Floyd and Pat Metheny, to mention just a couple of musical inspirations, can help me along. There is something about how Carl Sagan looked at the universe that always gets my motor running. And I can't emphasize enough that good writers and good stories really keep me motivated. There is no one writer, not even several. There are countless amazing authors, and every time I find one of those stories I didn't expect to touch me, but does, it drives me forward to get my thoughts down and flesh out these worlds that peek through my mind.

How many novels have you written including all work in progresses you are currently working on?

There are two completely finished, polished and ready, including my recently published novel, Hearts in Ruin. I have many works in progress, and four of them are drafts of novels I am presently revising.

Who is your "writing idol"? I.E. Who do you like and what is it about there writing that captures your soul?

John Steinbeck had a way of writing that allowed him to get out of the way so that it seemed the story simply unfolded. He's not the only one that's captured my soul. But he epitomizes a style I idolize.

What is you favorite plot line type?

I can't say I have one type of plot line that I favor, but there are criteria I like for selecting plot lines and developments. For me, it all has to do with the juxtaposition of character and circumstances. The plot has to be something that fits and focuses the key conflict and related problems the main character faces. Plots serve the story, not the other way around. But when I start a story, I usually have a very traditional three-act structure in mind and a character arc woven with it where the key plot catastrophe leading to the climax and the story arc epiphany work together. Whether that requires modification as the story develops depends a great deal on the characters and what their ids tell me, once they come to life for me.

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?

Read and write and write and read. Study the craft. Don't assume your work is golden. Learn to take, and appreciate, criticism. Stand your ground when you know what you're talking about. But don't be too quick to think you know what you're talking about. It takes time. Put the time in. Analyze works you like. Learn to enjoy revision, never stop learning, and always keep writing.

What is a good villain?

A great villain is someone that could be a hero from another perspective—someone with real motivations and something to lose—but in the end, someone who crosses the line and deserves the loss, rather than the win.

Here is the first kiss scene in the story—it takes place on an outside patio at a formal dinner at Daniel's former university. He is uncomfortable with some of his former colleagues and has stepped outside for a breath of fresh, desert air.

Later in the evening, Daniel slipped out to the patio for a reprieve—just a few moments of peace. The wide balcony overlooked the east side of campus with the lights of town beyond, backed by the night shadows of the mesa. He inhaled. Even here, amid streets, buildings, miles of surrounding commercial and residential neighborhoods, the scent of the uncivilized desert predominated. Its stillness soothed him.

#

“So there you are.”

Daniel turned, startled. Andrea stepped into view, stunning in Pamela’s dress. He’d seen her in it all evening, but not in the moonlight like this.

He struggled for composure. He hadn’t expected anyone to join him here, especially Andrea. She was a hit at the dinner, a fresh young woman, as smart as the stuffy regulars, but piercingly direct and good humored.

“Is everything all right?” he asked.

“Sure.” She stepped toward him. “Except my date ditched me.”

“I didn’t think you needed me in there.”

Her eyes glinted. “So, you tired of the crowd?”

He laughed. She could not have nailed it much better. “Let’s just say I’ve already been to enough meetings, dinners, and functions of all kinds with this group to fill a lifetime.”

She stood next to him now at the railing and stared across the campus. “It’s a pretty school.”

He shrugged. “It has its charms.”

A subtle hint of perfume mingled seamlessly with the desert breeze. Amazing. Most of the women inside seemed anxious to disguise or completely cover up the smell and feel of the dry desert environment. But Andrea, who had never lived in the climate or even visited the desert before, chose a fragrance that accepted it and even complimented its arid beauty.

“Not all fake Ivy-League like the U,” she explained.

He smiled. “No. And if you have a thing for adobe and stucco then you can really learn to love it.”

She turned, leaning back against the railing. “The people seem nice,” she ventured. “I don’t really know why you left. Just because they didn’t support the dig? It seems you could’ve worked it out with these folks.”

Daniel could not tear his gaze from her profile and the bare shoulders just touched by soft and inviting golden-brown hair. But he was held by more than that. All of her qualities were admirable. Not only was she fascinatingly attractive, and perhaps even in spite of it, she was brilliant and clear minded, and she loved her work.

“They um…” Daniel’s throat thickened, as if he were trying to talk underwater. There was something about her—something between them that transcended this project, he knew. He’d been avoiding it. He wanted no complications during the dig. But that was only part of the problem. The fact was, he didn’t want to draw her too far into his private quest. He couldn’t do that to her. Not now, not at this critical juncture with her career poised to launch. It was bad enough that she was the project leader, and he hoped she didn’t have to explain that away the rest of her life after he finally published his findings. But why then, if he felt that way, did he recruit her? She was clearly in the running for a post at a good school. This project, once the controversy surfaced, was not a good stepping stone on that path. Did he really think if he kept her role limited that it could minimize the fallout to her career?

It had been different for him. He didn’t work so hard for his opportunities. He had been young when he reached that point. Just eighteen, still a kid. He met Madeline and willingly abandoned most of the career courses Andrea should follow. He was committed to his project. He never saw it as a choice. But how could he lead Andrea down the same path—especially after she worked so hard for so many years to gain a solid foothold in academia?

Andrea’s brow furrowed with contemplation and she turned to him. “I think you should have just stuck to your guns here. They like you more than you know.”

He drew a breath. “Not all of them.”

She lowered her chin. “You’re about as likeable as they get.”

He smiled, and without thinking, touched her hand. She didn’t retreat. The air warmed with electricity. A remnant of his rational mind searched for a response to her statement—a quip, a compliment, a rebuttal…anything. But the futile effort was overshadowed by the sharpening of his senses, an awakening triggered by her presence and warm touch.

“I uh…”

She turned to face him squarely. He touched her arm, feeling the impossible softness of her skin. Her hand touched his stomach and slide to his waist. Her expression shifted. Her eyes surveyed his face. Was she searching for resistance or its opposite? He didn’t know. He wasn’t sure he cared. But he could tell that this closeness was something they’d both thought about before.

The moment grew, nearly eclipsing all else. He knew in his mind and heart that if he didn’t embrace her now, the moment could vanish forever. His heart pounded. He did not weigh options. This was not a matter of choice. It was roaring compulsion. He leaned close. He felt the heat of Andrea’s cheek, her warm breath. Their lips brushed across each other. Daniel savored the soft pass once, twice, then opening slightly more and connecting, pressing, tasting and melding. His chest filled with fire. The world fell away. He reached around her, pulling her close. She nestled in, leaving no gap.

He felt no barrier between them. His lips touched her nose, her cheek, the crook of her neck. He returned to her lips and they tasted each other again. Andrea mewed. It felt right to be lost in her touch and her breath. Their chests heaved together. Their embrace softened. Daniel roamed the curve of her spine. She responded with equal, soft passion. He felt the release of a long, satisfied sigh.

They touched foreheads.

He smiled. She giggled lightly.

A rough, “Ahem,” broke the moment like shattered crystal. They weren’t alone.

Eyes widened, they released their holds and turned.

“I don’t mean to disturb you.”

Daniel regained his bearing. William Lassiter and Morgan Hamilton stood near the patio door holding cocktail tumblers.

From the moment they meet until she goes looking for him to check on him she is thrown for a loop on what to do with Driscoll. She knows he is a famous singer yet it’s the man who is tender, open and downright weird—he calls it eccentric—who has her coming back for more. He is like nothing she has experienced before. Lila has no idea where things are going but she is willing to hold on for the ride with the man who pushes all her buttons.

Driscoll Jacobs knows when life provides you with an opportunity you take it, make it yours and make sure it never leaves. No woman has made him feel like Lila does—on edge one moment then at ease the next. The sassy woman is a challenge he is looking forward to getting to know better—as he does he finds himself in circumstances he’s never been in before. She is in his blood and he doesn’t plan to let her go.

It started as a meeting neither expected but with a determined man it will become much more than an unexpected encounter …

Back to writing...

When I got home from RT Convention I slept then slept some more. :) Then tried to play catch up from when I was gone but was so tired so went to sleep some more. The convention was a blast and by the time it was done I was tired but revved. It energized my mind filling it with loads of ideas. :) I have the notes I wrote for the ideas and will eventually put them in some kind of order.

I’m back to work today on my current work in progress. Love the story and was hard not working on it while at conference but I knew if I had tried to work on it I’d be holed up in my room at the conference and forget all about anything else. LOL. I read where I left off in my story and my head is filled with words I need to get on the page so I'm now off to write.

Ink Motions with Leigh Ellwood

whoo

I am Leigh Ellwood. I write smutty stories about people who like getting naked and having sex. Some have more sex than others, some have sex with people of the same gender, some have sex with more than one person, and still others have sex with toys and things that require the use of batteries. My stories range from a few thousand words to well past 70k. The book list link above breaks everything down for you – genre, length, and other attributes. My books are available at Amazon, B&N, Smashwords, Kobo, and ARe. Really, just type my name in any bookstore site and something is bound to show up. I prefer ARe as a vendor because they rock, but feel feel to buy my books anywhere you like.

How do you get an idea for your novel?

Ideas for stories come in different ways. I might see something on the news and expand it into a story, or I’ll see something when I’m out shopping and wonder what would happen if a person did this or that. My next story, A DIFFERENT CLASS, came about when I received news of my high school reunion. With recent stories of bullying in schools, I thought about a person who was bullied being invited to his reunion, and I worked from there.

What is your writing style?  Do you just sit down and write or do you create character sketches, outlines, or notes?

It depends on the story. For standalone stories I tend to wing it. If I know something will be a series I will keep profiles on people and places. For mysteries and stories with structure, I may outline the work but I don’t always stick to the outline. Sometimes, too, I just write free.

Who is the "Writing Muse" in your life? I.E. who gets your juices flowing when you are blocked?

When I get blocked I put on some music. Talking Heads, The Who, Rush, Genesis…eventually one of them loosens a screw and I get back to work.

How many novels have you written including all work in progresses you are currently working on?

I have about eight full-length novels, and many many stories and novellas available. In June I release my novella SUGAR RUSH from Ellora’s Cave, and I’m working on a serial romance and another novella for EC after that.

Who is your "writing idol"? I.E. Who do you like and what is it about there writing that captures your soul?

I grew up reading humorists. Lewis Grizzard, Erma Bombeck, Dave Barry… Sometimes you need to laugh and I found reading their work helped me through some rough times.

What is you favorite plot line type?

I like a number of tropes – hero returns to small town, fish out of water scenarios. I’ve written a few of them.

Is there any advice you can offer to anyone who would like to write?

Write, and write some more. Make the time, and write what you enjoy.

What is a good villain?

A good villain is realistic – one who offers solid motivation for his actions. He/she has a history of hurt or revenge, and while you might not empathize with him/her, you should understand everything.

“Mr. Maloney?”

“Who is calling?”

The voice—deep and rich, anything but a mumble, intimidated Glenn. Maybe the guy had been a jock, a several-feet-wide football player who helped the school win the championship that year. Glenn hadn’t attended many games and skipped homecoming…showed what he remembered about that. “Um,” suddenly he forgot why he called, “I’m representing the reunion committee of the Franklin D. Roosevelt High School Class of 2004. You can probably guess the big tenth is coming up—”

“You know what, I’m going to save you the sales pitch,” Mumbles Maloney interrupted. “I don’t know who you are, and I don’t give a shit. It’s taken me a long time to get past all the crap I put up with in high school, and if you think I’m going to show up at some rented ballroom all smiling as though the hell you assholes you put me through never happened, forget it.”

What? The man’s anger surged through Glenn and sped up his heartbeat. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean—”

“Fuck you, fuck FDR High, and fuck every last piece of shit homophobe in that backwater town. I hope you all get cancer.”

Click.

Beth burst into the room, waving a thick tome with a scaly blue cover. “Found it,” she chirped.

“Never mind,” Glenn muttered, and pushed away from the desk. Mumbles Maloney’s palpable rage lingered in the quiet of the small office, invoking a sense of doom in an otherwise dull place. Glenn doubted he’d forget that voice for a long while. The man obviously had pent-up issues with his former schoolmates, yet for all the vitriol burning through the airwaves and sizzling in the veins, Glenn couldn’t help but think that Mumbles was…well…

Sexy.
