Shifters come in all shapes and sizes—werewolves, coyotes, dragons and my favorite type, which is big cats such as leopards, lions and tigers.
One day I decided to write a different kind of shifter. I pondered for a few weeks, thinking up and discarding various options. Since I live in New Zealand, I wanted a shifter that would fit a New Zealand setting. We’re an island country, surrounded by the Tasman Sea on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other.
Whales, I thought.
Perfect.
My next step was to narrow down the whale species. We have lots of whales in New Zealand waters, but some are present for only part of the year. That ruled out the humpback whale. We have sperm whales, Right whales and the orca, which is really part of the dolphin family. Given the narrowed down list, I knew which one I’d choose—the orca because they’re so pretty and graceful. They’re also awesome hunters and aggressive with it.
Next, I needed a plot. Why not take their fearsome reputation and have two tribes who are sworn enemies? And what if my hero and heroine came from different tribes and fell in love?
This is when I started to get excited and my story, Currents Run Deep almost wrote itself.
Here’s the blurb:
A sexy face in the crowd…
Shifter Asia Bolino can’t believe the gorgeous cutie is Roman Anderson. They belong to enemy tribes, but she’d love to run her fingers over his…assets. Roman doesn’t recognize her, and in a moment of weakness, Asia agrees to a late-night date, a little forbidden pleasure.
Someone attacks Roman while he waits for Asia. Aware of his shifter status, Asia takes him back to her apartment. The problem is when he regains consciousness, he thinks they’re married. He parades around her apartment wearing nothing but a smile, and Asia is weak. She succumbs to his charm and skilful loving. Hip-deep in lies, she’s aware the sensual bubble might burst at any moment. That might mean bloodshed, and she can’t allow that to happen. Worse, Roman doesn’t seem to recall he’s a shifter.
Asia struggles with guilt while melting at Roman’s touch. Nothing can come of their relationship, and now it seems someone knows the truth and they’re both in danger.
And a short excerpt:
Roman Anderson thought they were married.
Married!
The word reverberated through her head while he continued to kiss her, nibbling at her lips until she gasped. He took immediate advantage, his tongue sliding inside her mouth, stroking, teasing and generally making her crazy for more of the same. He drew her closer still, kicking free of the sheet covering him and rolling so he pressed her into the mattress. Her heart reveled in the weight of him. His scent—her soap from his early morning shower—drove her crazy. Touch. She wanted to touch, and ignoring the voice of reason, she did. Trembling hands cupped his face and slid through his silky, dark hair. A moan built deep in her chest while her pulse rate accelerated.
Roman eased out of the kiss and drew back to smile down at her. “How did I ever luck out getting you to marry me?”
Asia swallowed. Someone hit you on the head! If you were in your right mind you wouldn’t be here with me. Guilt rose to nip her sharply in the conscience. She had to tell him the truth before the lie became too big. It had already taken on a life of its own.
Roman grinned. “Not going to answer? You never used to—” He broke off with a trace of confusion, his hands tightening on her shoulders. When he noticed her wince, he grimaced in apology and bent to soothe the ache with a kiss. “What’s going on? I don’t remember. I don’t remember how we met or our wedding day or anything.” Roman removed his hands from her shoulders and sat up on the bed. He ran a hand through his thick hair. “Dammit, I can’t remember your name!”
